Re: Who uses effects?
Seeing as the only way to perserve the animators and director's original artistic intentions would be to play the source straight, I don't think it's that big a deal. The whole point of remix culture is to alter the original creation. If this involves fundamental changes to the source such as color corrections and whatnot; so be it.

You should oalso write your own editing program in your own compiler.LittleAtari wrote:I make my own grunge effectsand everyone should start making their own original effects too

Re: Who uses effects?
blabbler, LittleAtari and Vivaldi, thanks, this is where I wanted this topic to head. So then, we editors are under the general consensus that we are under no moral obligation to accredit the original footage we 'enhanced' to suit our own purposes? I can see that line of thought if these things remained on our own computers, but since we're going public with these things, are we as editors too arrogant in the way we remix other artistic work and pass it as our own? Do most editors ever bother to add in our video description 'studio x and y did a good job in presenting their footage, I had to change the contrast of the sources because I was aiming for a darker tone to my video'? Do most editors TRY to understand the footage they are using and any possible context surrounding its creation before we instigate our artistic endeavours? Do we even sub-consciously give praise to the animators of the original footage or do we generally think these days that we are > them because from our perspective we are 'enhancing/adding' to the original footage? I don't think its fine to justify that we're doing something different and therefore can isolate away from the original footage without first acknowledging that we are essentially trampling on artistic talent. See last paragraph for reply to LittleAtari in relations to this.
I made this topic because I feel that anime these days are just being 'tossed aside' by editors because the anime "had a different purpose from what we use of it in AMVs", so now instead of "Who uses effects?" I propose a new question "Do you ever think about the original footage or do you go straight into your editing experiments?" Yes we're using the footage for a different purpose but to what extent can we claim our works to be our own? I'm not saying we idolise the anime footage, but rather that we take some time to think about the footage we're using out of respect to the artists who created it and if possible, give some proper accrediation in written form.
Am I making any sense here or should I conclude this topic with "editors are arrogant human beings"? =|

Re: Who uses effects?
I think about it when I watch it, since I use only the anime I have watched, wouldn't be able to do otherwise. If it's simply "some footage", I can't work with it, I need to know the story behind it, even if I change it - but I need to know "how" I changed it.OropherZero wrote:"Do you ever think about the original footage or do you go straight into your editing experiments?"
So in this regard I suppose you can say I think about the original footage a lot.

Re: Who uses effects?
I failed to present my argument clearly, as noted in #amv /dead topic =O

Re: Who uses effects?
out of interest to recent discussion in #amv, who here had edited without even watching the anime used in the vid?

Re: Who uses effects?
I have to say I have never done that. I have edited using incomplete anime, but never what I haven't seen.

Re: Who uses effects?
I know I've done quite a bit of editing without having seen the source first. Happens all the time in ICs for me. I actually don't mind not knowing what is suppose to be happening in the show because that has a tenancy to curve my mindset towards keeping the original story intact. The less I know about a series the easier it is for me to make my own stories up with the source.

Re: Who uses effects?
That's true. Lately I've been watching a lot of AMVs with fancy effects to see how they've done it, then experimented with different styles of effects to see which ones work best. It sometimes dosen't work, but I guess that's how everybody improves: learning from your mistakes.Infinity Squared wrote:It's fine to do it even if you don't do it well. Heck, just like in your case, if you didn't dabble in it, there wouldn't have been a bar to set yourself to and beat to improve.DarkPhoenix22 wrote:It's fine to use effects as long as you do it well.
