But what about the start and the ending... you had to "cut" the video to start and finish...Kitsuner wrote:Cuts are effects. Truly simple video use a single long shot.

I think I have seen AMVs like that.

Of course, you would also be prohibited from using music other than the source's own sound.Malificus wrote:NIGHTMARE MODE: Start with the opening, end after the credits, NO CUTS.Infinity Squared wrote:But what about the start and the ending... you had to "cut" the video to start and finish...Kitsuner wrote:Cuts are effects. looks like most people missed the point of this thread, by first ignoring the kind of effects im referring to in relations to the original footage, oh well =(

to be fair it's not like you're stealing credit from the animators and artists that work on the series.OropherZero wrote:So lately I've been thinking. Are there any other editors who feel a bit guilty when trying to put an effect in an AMV?
...Like you're taking a gigantic shit on the animation studio's creative work?
... is it morally acceptable to put in-your-face effects like grunge on these anime footage which pretty much devalues the work put in by the animation studio(s)?
i expect the vast majority of the anime we use is pretty cynical low budget production-line stuff anyway, and if you think you've made it look or work better for your purposes, what's the problem? as long as you're not somehow presenting your mitch-gear grungefest as representative of the anime, i don't see a problem.
(and even if you are i doubt anybody cares)

Seriously though, the whole point of this hobby is to create something different out of the original sources. Technically speaking, us editing can be seen as taking a huge dump on the original sequencing of the clips. So yea, I dont see using effects has destroying the original animation. I actually see it as enhancing it. I'm not saying that the original animation is not good enough, but the original animation had a different purpose from what we use of it in AMVs. So we take the animation and we adjust it for a different purpose. We are not destroying the animation. We're adding on to it.

Re: Who uses effects?
It's fine to use effects as long as you do it well. In my case, I'm perfectly happy with an AMV's effects when I make it and for a while afterwards, but after a few months I go through some form of improvement in my skills, look back on my old videos and think; ''Shit, was I really that bad?!
''. And then I feel guilty for messing up all those anime companies' beautiful animation.

It's fine to do it even if you don't do it well. Heck, just like in your case, if you didn't dabble in it, there wouldn't have been a bar to set yourself to and beat to improve.DarkPhoenix22 wrote:It's fine to use effects as long as you do it well.
