Who uses effects?
So lately I've been thinking. Are there any other editors who feel a bit guilty when trying to put an effect in an AMV? By effects, I'm referring to altering the colour schemes/contrast/lighting etc not kooptangles, motion or 3D extra work. Like you're taking a gigantic shit on the animation studio's creative work? Maybe once upon a time it felt right to use such effects and do these things to anime footage because detail and creativity was lacking in the footage - it looked plain and dull, but with newer anime, like say ef, Bakemonagatari, Aoi Hana, which all have a specific 'style' by the studio, is it morally acceptable to put in-your-face effects like grunge on these anime footage which pretty much devalues the work put in by the animation studio(s)?

Re: Who uses effects?
There are perfectly good reasons to mess with things like the color.
Like say I'm working with Gankutsuou. As there's such a broad range in colors throughout the series, some of the scenes are far too dark to go with others, or would otherwise stand out in a bad way if put amidst other clips. In these cases, I need to either modify the clip to match, or find a different, possibly less appropriate clip.

This is a remix culture. If adding "in-your-face effects like grunge" is the way you see fit to add your own flavor to the video, then you should do it. If grunge isn't you, don't add it in. In other words, do what you feel is best to make a video yours.

Thats what im saying. Is it morally okay to impose on another artist's (animation studio) work to make the vid feel like 'yours', assuming the vid goes public in some way. Does your video give enough credit to the original footage used?Kitsuner wrote:In other words, do what you feel is best to make a video yours.

I think that the effects must be used when necessary, according to the ideas and concept that you create!
Since I learned to use AE I have learned to create effects more details... I think it also has programs that each of us can use...

Re: Who uses effects?
It's acceptable if you know what you are doing.
The only time I will ever use an effect is if it emphasizes/highlights something I want the audience to see.
I see effects as just a way of directing your eyes to see something particular about the footage or music.
1. Effects for Footage
If the effect highlights something about the footage, it can only strengthen the work put in by the animation studio(s). Obvious examples would be masking, panning, and zooming. Essentially you are saying "the animators animated this-- Look at it!" Things like lighting/color/grunge are a little more difficult to explain... but basically they show the animation from a different perspective, which ultimately heightens one aspect of the footage such as mood. For example, adding grunge to a frantic scene heightens how frantic the scene is; you mess around with the colors/brightness because it doesn't match the rest of the footage... but you use the scene because it helps with the story. In both cases you are pulling something out of the animation, which IMO pays tribute to the original animation studio.
2. Effects for Music
If the effect highlights something about the music, it can certainly strengthen the work put in by the musical artist. It's always nice to see something that looks like what you hear. (Cymbal crash) + (explosion); (words) + (lip sync); in the case of effects, (swooshing sound) + (smoke) etc...
How these two components interact with each other is when it starts to get complicated-- because one component might take precedence over the other, and you have to start deciding what you care about more. For instance, lens flares might work well with the music, but they might make it difficult to see what's going on [if used improperly of course] and even distract you from watching the footage. Unless that's what you want. You can certainly make an AMV that only uses Effects for Music, and craps all over the animation, if that's what you want. Although that'd be kinda difficult to do to begin with... IMO any time you use footage, you pay some tribute to it... you would have to make some sort Graffiti AMV if you wanted to devalue the animation. But generally speaking, people don't want to do that, so it's all about balance. like everything.
.
If you don't want to devalue the work put in by the animation studio, I don't think effects should be frowned upon as long as the footage is the central focus.
But in the end, if you use an effect, you better have a good reason

Re: Who uses effects?
Since you asked your question again, I'll answer it again. Make the video yours. This doesn't necessarily mean using effects or changing the footage at all, but if it's appropriate for your goal, then there's nothing inherently wrong with it. I don't see how the citation would be different no matter how much the footage gets altered.OropherZero wrote:Thats what im saying.
