Re: 'so do you have any hobbies or interests?'
What are the chances that someone without much of a grasp of the hobby would construe the purposefully-vague term "freelance video editing" as possibly meaning "amateur pornography," especially if you mention the Internet in relation to it?

I don't list "Anime music videos", but I list my awards on my resume. When an employer asks, I give them the details.
So far they've been pretty impressed with the concept, but it's not as well known as you'd think it is.

That would probably improve your chances of getting the jobCastor Troy wrote:I don't list "Anime music videos", but I list my awards on my resume. When an employer asks, I give them the details.

Just avoid using words that in particular have a lot of baggage associated with them. (anime ect.) And make it sound as important as possible without lying. Unless it's a specific or important job. I doubt they'd do enough research to find out that winning best in show at San Diego NBF Jorgencon's annual national expo isn't as big a deal as it sounds.

Re: 'so do you have any hobbies or interests?'
I always list it as "Digital Video Editing".
You better choose your words wisely.
That's so true. There is so much potential to make you look good with this hobby. I won "Highest Artistic Value" for one amv at the Connichi in Germany. Now don't tell me that an award with the title "Highest Artistic Value" at the biggest convention/contest in Germany with tons of visitors can't be impressive to someone.ngsilver wrote: Personally, I don't find it that big of a deal. If I do get asked about AMVs I generally talk about it as a way I gained my skills by teaching myself through doing which allowed me to gain the skills I needed to do the freelance work. With some creative thinking beforehand you can easily mask the fact that you just do it for fun by simply calling it practice for future career possibilities. In the end you just need to choose your words wisely, and go into the interview expecting a question about it and already have an answer in your head.
Or something like: "I'm one of the most popular amv editor of my country over the internet"Say "video editing." When it comes to getting a job, you never know what kind of rash judgments somebody might make if they see something like "Anime Music Videos" on a resume.
You better choose your words wisely.

I call it Amateur Music Video editing to anyone who isn't really in the know.. and when they ask what that is, I tell them that I take movies or shows that I like and set them to music to see if I like the results.

Re: 'so do you have any hobbies or interests?'
Generally it's not a fantastic idea to go into detail about something you do that has absolutely no bearing on the job or your ability to perform it well. There are many leading questions in the interview process, and "what hobbies do you have" is certainly one of them. I have a lot of hobbies, among them gardening, but I'd never bring THAT up in an interview unless I was trying to seem "green" or outdoorsy or into flowers or something.
Bottom line: if you're going to reference ANY hobby, put the appropriate spin on it and make sure it's a positive. I think that goes for anything you say during an interview, though.

You should really call it "video remixing". The word "Amateur" can be taken the wrong way.JaddziaDax wrote:I call it Amateur Music Video editing to anyone who isn't really in the know.. and when they ask what that is, I tell them that I take movies or shows that I like and set them to music to see if I like the results.
