If you go for Vegas, just be aware it may save you hundreds to get your hands on an earlier version such as Vegas 7 in order to include masking features. Premiere must be operable, because obviously people edit with it, but the early versions of Premiere Elements are craptastic. (Waste of my extra 40$ into a combo pack.)

If you're willing to pay alot of money to buy a really good program then Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas Pro seem to be the popular choice, but if you're looking for something a bit cheaper then you could try Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9.0, which is what I use. You can get it online for about £25-£50. It's not as advanced as Sony Vegas Pro but you can still make awesome videos with it. If you want something free then go here:
