Is it worth getting AE?

I use Sony Vegas for most of my editing and may use Photoshop for gif animation to add in an amv but I was wondering if it's worth getting AE?

I know many will have their own opinion; I'm more looking for pros vs. cons, what you can do in AE compared to Vegas, etc.

Any editor can get the job done; which one works best for you Usually depends
on which one you first TRYed to edit something with AND SUCCEEDED!

I like Magix Video Editer 2.0 for building the AMV.

I like Avidemux for Proof Encoding ( looking for Flaws )

I like Sansa's encoder for Making my final Encode.

Pretty much what post-it said. If you're comfortable with Vegas, I think you stick with it. Vegas is more user- friendly when it comes down to editing your video and AE has better integration with other Adobe software like Photoshop. But that doesn't make either one a superior software.
You should probably try out the trial, but in the end it all boils down to which one you're more comfortable with.

I am very comfortable using Vegas but was wondering if Vegas + AE would be a good combination. Say something you can't do in Vegas... but you can do in AE, etc. So if I use AE for clip making (particle effects and animation), then drop it back into Vegas to finish my video.

Is that worth it?

Well, incase you haven't already, download the trial from adobe and form an opinion from that.

If you want to do a hefty amount of motion graphics, compositing or effects, then it's worth it. The combination of AE + Vegas works just fine if you're organized.

Whether it's worth it is entirely dependent on what you're planning to do with it. But yes, it has the functionality you described.

If you're willing to spend the money on it then by all means, go ahead. After Effects has some functions/effects that Vegas doesn't and vice-versa, so using both of them would give you a lot more choices while editing. But personally, I would rather get a software like Particle Illusion than AE. I think Particle Illusion+ Vegas has more to offer than Vegas+ AE. Just my opinion though.

Well, I got the demo for Particle Illusion before and couldn't figure it out.
I got the demo for AE yesterday and fell in love with it. I'm familiar with Premiere from college and Photoshop so I was able to get right into it.
Hmm, now I have to save up.

If you're already really familiar with Photoshop, then learning AE is quite a bit nicer. It's easier to think about AE as "Photoshop with motion" (in a sense). I don't personally use Vegas so I can't say what it offers or doesn't offer in contrast with AE. I think you should first ask yourself what it is you actually want to do with your videos. If it's stuff that involves compositing, complex masking/rotoscoping, motion graphics, 3D effects, particles, etc., then sure. Give AE a whirl. But if you're mainly focusing on straight-up editing with maybe some simple effects (blurs, color correction, etc.), than Vegas is probably more than enough.
