PPC Mac Users, Please Sound Off

Post by Kionon » Sat Jun 20, 2009 7:18 pm

I have now spent two days pretty much doing nothing but PPC Macintosh research above and beyond what I have already done. I need a count of how many people use PPC macintoshes as their ONLY editing computer, or otherwise do not have convenient or regular access to an Intel Macintosh or a Windows PC.

Trying to set up a filtering strategy on a PPC mac has very much been like going down the rabbit hole. So far, compared to avisynth, there just isn't really an option that comes even close. And I want to know if I should continue my research down this line at all? With two intel macs in the house, I don't need to to do my pre-processing work on my PPCs, even though I will probably edit using Premiere 6.5 one of my G4s at 10.3.9. I imagine at this point most individuals I talk to are either Intel, or they have a Windows PC around enough to be able to use.

Is there any genuine interest in a detailed PPC write up? I don't mean "oh, hey that'd be kinda cool." I mean, is there anyone stuck on a PPC who desperately needs me to keep hacking away? Because if not, I'm going to stop here. I'll toss all the research in So You Wanna 3.0, with my current warnings and disclaimers intact, and may even go into more detail in my actual mac guide, but the PPC research is keeping me from refining my Intel methodology, so I'd like to get this out of the way now before I invest more time and effort into it.

I have a PPC mac. But it's fried. I used to use my Intel Mac for editing. But I recently switched to using Premiere Pro on the PC.

Then my topic does not apply to you. I need to hear from people who ONLY have a PPC machine. Try not to respond unless this is the case, I need an accurate idea of the level of need.

Honestly, I don't think there's much use for a PPC Mac editing writeup. With Snow Leopard coming out, which will drop codebase support for all PPC hardware, the PPC architecture will essentially be dead in mainstream personal computing. The PPC machines I use don't run OSX anymore because 10.5 has just gotten too bloated and inefficient for that older generation of CPU - they run either the base Darwin install (command prompt + ssh access only) or Debian.

Speaking of Debian, I know AVISynth does exist on Linux... has anyone tried seeing if it compiles on PPC+Linux?

Well, honestly. I was going just ask this be removed. Writeup is done. And anyhow, I already know all the above.
