A fancy idea: Random AMV generator?
NOTE: I suppose this is the right forum to post this topic, but if any moderator disagrees, please move it to the appropriate one (or even lock it if you think it is fitting nowhere). Thanks, and sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Ever thought of having a real-time music visualizer which looks like some kind of randomly-generated AMV...? This fancy idea came to my mind while I was developing a small Sidebar gadget program called "System Animator". I don't want to make this sounds like some kind of shameless promotion, so I will go straight to the point. One of the functions of "System Animator" is to monitor "Sound output", by displaying user-defined "animation" (basically a folder with a sequence of images) with varying speed and effects based on the loudness and spectrum data of the current sound output. As you can imagine, this function somewhat resembles a music visualizer. The following video is a demonstration of what I am talking about.
utube/watch?v=vvM5sQ5xEyE
If you are expecting some kind of perfectly-synced AMV or try to compare it with the usual manually scripted MV, you will probably be disappointed. However, as some kind of random AMV-like visuals you can enjoy while listening to your music, I think this is still quite an interesting idea. Besides, you can always design your own random animation sequence (the design process is somewhat like making a usual AMV, except that you are not making it for one specific music).
What do you guys think?

No I am not talking about a slideshow. It is hard to describe it in mere words. Well errrr it seems this place doesn't allow direct links to You.Tube videos, not even URL with this word in it. I have re-uploaded a few screenshot elsewhere (without that word in the URLs... lol) to give you a better idea of what I am talking about.Kitsuner wrote:http://www.animoto.com/
Is this the kind of thing you're suggesting? Or am I misunderstanding?

This screenshot shows 1 "System Animator" gadget with an AMV-style animation (the dancing Yuna), along with the EQ spectrum gadget.

This screenshot shows 9 "System Animator" gadgets, 2 of them with an AMV-style animation (the 2 docked on the Sidebar).
Lastly, I still recommend watching the video demo below to give you the best picture of what I am talking about.

um... yeah that's kinda NOT what we do here. At this site we kinda like to do it the old-fashioned way. And if you want these AMV Generator things go to a different site that has one to generate your AMV. I don't know if it could be cataloged here though.

Personally as programmer I'm somehow impressed of this (well useless but nice) gadget. I would keep on working on it. I would make something like a clip library and tag them with moods or something. Than I would get or write an algorythmen that analyzes the speed/modd/whatever of the song that's played or the action that is going on the desktop. When I get the mood/speed/whatever of the media I could easly visualize it with the tagged clips. I could use sappy-tagged clips for visualizing a sad song.
However I don't know why somebody would want such a useless thing. I bet it eats a fair amount of your cpu power and the library clips sure take some harddiscspace too.
On the other hand this technique has some potential. I have the feeling that there could be some great stuff with something that goes into this direction.

For the record, if you want to link to a 'tube video, just redirect it through http://tinyurl.com/
That much is allowed and it works perfectly.

Well that would depend on how you define "useless". It's like those icons, gadgets (many people use clock gadgets, but why would someone "need" another clock on their desktop anyways?), animated wallpapers and all those fancy desktop-decorating stuff. You can use your PC without them, and they won't bring you any new functions, but many people still like to personalize their desktop with them. Besides, my gadget takes up just a tiny part of the screen, and it can take a fairly low amount of system resource (depending on the size and complexity of the animation you use), so even as some "useless" eye candies (well you can use the animation as a music visualizer, or some kind of system activity monitor or PC meter, which is actually what this gadget was originally designed for), I think it still has its values to some people. And when we talk about "useless"... they are actually tons of desktop toys, mascots and stuff out there which are even more useless than this, yet they still have their fans LOLBauzi wrote:Personally as programmer I'm somehow impressed of this (well useless but nice) gadget. Your ideas regarding a tagged clip library and stuff are interesting, but they will be quite a lot more complicated than what I am doing right now, which is basically still a JavaScript-based project. I like how my current approach is simple in the way it works and how you can define your own animation in some very simple ways.
Anyways, I appreciate any more ideas that can improve this gadget.

Do you think that these advanced features will be ready by 2017?ButzYung wrote:Bauzi wrote:Personally as programmer I'm somehow impressed of this (well useless but nice) gadget.
