I believe they're referring to the process of tracing along the outlines of a particular visual element in compositing software in order to "cut" it out and use it with other footage.

so yeah, masking.

thats the impression I've picked up, anyway.

I'd only give it out if said editor puts a watermark on his amv with the text "Rotoscoping done by Shui" and of course, one has to pay per frame :|

rotoscoping is the process of tracing live action footage to create an animation. (It was used for orcs in LotR the animation if you were ever unlucky enough to see it)

When we do masking, it's basically the same thing, except we're masking instead of animating. However, masking could be anything, while rotoscoping implies tracing it. So people tend to say roto.

So when I spend hours upon hours tracing like 10 or 20 different frames of a character in order to put it together into less than a second of moving footage I am definitely rotoscroping :P
