I sort of view myself as being in a kind of pre-renaissance mode right now. Have for a couple years, actually. Part of my slowdown does have to do with the fact I haven't jumped on the effects bandwagon, but also because I can barely sustain my own editing workflow on my hardware anymore, and that gets me frustrated and I end up avoiding it like the plague. Should I manage to get a far better setup, my editing will probably come back to some degree as well (also to note, I edited more when I was employed at a job I loathed - methinks it was the release that allowed me to be so productive; I quit that job in early May of '04).

I started out in 2002, but I didn't really get onto the forums until late 2003/early 2004. As popular videos have come and gone, what I've mainly noticed is that the priority seems to have shifted. Sure, there's always been and always will be crowd-whoring, but at that point in time there seemed to at least be a general acknowledgment that even videos that were shameless crowd-whores had to be interesting and have actual substance to them. I don't see that as much now - not to say there aren't videos with substance (or that effects videos these days have none), but I think it does come down to a generational thing. A lot of effects nowadays have a lot to do with vector overlays and color manipulation and other *shiny* stuff, which, while it can be used well, gets awfully tiresome after seeing it three dozen times or more. What were praised for effects before this latest craze were more cinematic in nature (even if that 'cinematic' aspect still revolved around more or less conventional camera/editing tricks or compositing - dokool's Calling All Alters, for instance). Getting jaded seems to be an inevitability, but it's simply a matter of whether you decide to just throw in the towel and step away because of it, or if you genuinely don't care and use it because you never cared much for trendiness.

Is it 'passing the torch'? To some degree, but it's not like we'll ever lack for active elder statesmen. It's just a matter of graduating into that group. As much as I would deny it for myself, that group could possibly be generalized to the pre-2005 members that are still sticking around. At one time it probably consisted of pre-2003 members, and before that it was editors who started before the Org was even founded. You see progressively fewer numbers of them the further back you go, but they're still there.

Yes, some of us are adults who can finally afford to be kids :D

Do you seriously want to live (full time) in the grown up world??? Give your head a shake man!!!

Learning to edit amvs gave me skills to earn good money. To me editing isn't work no matter how boring.....it's like playing. So I get to be a kid all the time now :D

Again I'll bring up the point that I've lurked here for so long and watched how editing has effected you all negatively and positively. Therefore, I've tried to anticipate the disappointment, loss of innocence, jadedness ect and deal with it before it becomes an issue in my own creativity.
