What I find sad, rather, is the fact that we are aiming towards effect elitism. It's fairly hard to find "good" simple cut AMV. They are still out there, but there's more and more editors who mask their inability to choose good scene and make a good cut with effects, which supports this wave :<

That said, great props to all who make simple cut AMVs :>

And there's even more people who will decry a video using effects as the cancer killing amvs no matter how deliberate the scene selection is. :\

Why must there be this rift? >_<

I dont think it is sad, its just part of life, eventually everything fade, do you think about all the pictures in a gallery that will never be watched by anyone?

i guess it is part of the editor to make "publicity" for his/her job. there's a lot of pages, including the site that must not be named.

and about new wave of crazy effects, who cares? if an "editor" do a crazy effect job, so cool... that is his/her job, if you dont like,it's so simple don't watch it, it doesnt mean its a better o worst job, it is his/her style

you can't find good simple amvs because bad editors are making bad effects amvs instead of (presumably) bad simple amvs, thus promoting a vicious and destructive wave of effects elitism?

:?

we need to report this to the authorities!

Actually, AMVs have their DJs -- being within the collections of those who run (or manage) AMV rooms and AMV-playing video rooms at anime conventions. A lot of old videos get good play at conventions, through specific blocks of programming or through just asking for the videos to be played during freeplay segments. :)

I think it's natural for AMVs to have a "new" bias, because music has a "new" bias. I don't think it's particularly sad... the classics get remembered. People who know AMVs know what you're talking about when you mention Caldwell or Odorikuruu, just as people who know movies know what you're talking about when you mention Citizen Kane or Seven Samurai.

I'd watch a classic AMVs podcast if someone started one.

It's how things go. The old fades way to the new. How many books from the 1960's are still on best seller lists? Is there a high demand for movies from 1950? Do most TV shows have as many viewers in syndication as when they were new? There's nothing really sad about it, it's just how things go. If you care then pimp some old videos in your sig or something.

I used to think like this but then I realized it was just cause I'm not all that good with FX admittedly so I strayed away from those amv's. Now though, I've realized that as long as your not watching the AMV and being WOW'd by solely the FX (The actual editing/concept/execution), then for the most part the fx are being used well. Consider them a way to spice up or enhance your amv, not a way to impress your audience. If your thinking along the lines of impressing them then your going astray...

On topic... I don't consider old amv's dead or dying at all. In fact some of them become well known for being created so long ago and still being enjoyable. In fact alot of people have them in their favorites list and eventually they DO get clicked and viewed. They may get buried under the newer amv's but they will never be lost/dead. It's more redeeming to find old amvs that were hits back in the day regardless when super searching. I wouldn't argue against an amv recommendations thread for oldies that you thought were thoroughly enjoyable or ahead of their times though  .
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

I agree with Eva-Fan on not considering old amvs dead, I became an amv fan in early '07 and a majority of amvs I find that has more replay value are those created way back when. I could see that the editors had more fun and edited the way they desired, instead of trying to grab everyone's attention by not following their own styles and copying others' which seems to be almost every upcoming editor's main goal these days. Not saying that I don't enjoy amvs that have been created recently but I'm seeing more heart put into amvs I like that have been out for a while, amvs I mainly watch that comes out now are from people I associate with who knows how to edit decently and I hardly check out others' that I don't know unless I hear good things and become interested in their anime and/or song choices.
