Epeen contest eh? Well I consider those animes mostly boring, well, Mush and GITSSAC- boring; Kino, Paranoia Agent- I dunno I feel smart watching it xD but like Lain it's overall very niche ala hit and miss; Bartender- not seen it
Anyway these are all your and my opinion, PERSONAL Best not the PUBLIC Best the mainstream conforms to.

yes, you can. that's why there are baselines otherwise how could you trust reviews? Actually what you are saying is you probably don't trust reviews as they wouldn't have your answer, they try to talk to the mainstream. All fine and good but, you know, it's just easier if you just quit ignoring the mainstream.
BEST in a reviews case is BEST in the mainstream's case right? You don't want someone making your mind up for you only YOU can make your mind up for you right? So when the reviewer says 'this is the BEST' or 'this is NOT the best' he is speaking to the MAINSTREAM or public, he is NOT dictating a private opinion. In the word of a review, this review, but many reviews, BEST is targeted at the mainstream.
To further complicate things some reviewers (like the former EGM) only like to speak for themselves, but the BEST reviews tend to be the ones aimed at the mainstream. These reviews tend to be on par with such sites as gamerankings.com or our very own op #'s telling us what the PUBLIC (MAINSTREAM) likes BEST.

NOW the way Hasteroth was using the word 'mainstream', was synonymous with BEST. Hasteroth's examples were Eva and Naruto and so on- he meant the BEST of the mainstream right? No? Even if he JUST meant mainstream... well I can't take EVA or Naruto cuz they ARE amongst the best in their category aren't they? But take Linkin Park... though I don't really have an opinion on their music I'll show you how THEY are the best. This will be hard because I really don't know jack about emo music or whatever, but. Well there's your answer, who's better than them? Nobody you'd like cuz I'd bet you don't like their music in the first place. Open and shut book.
Bad example on the grounds that I don't know any bands to compare LP to (Trust Company? I've always thought they were TOO similar).
... ok I'll compare it to Trust Company. Trust Company IMO IS better than LP.... you know what? I'm not doing this... as EVA (I stress EVA) Fan says you CAN'T do a comparison in a proper review. Why? cuz than it's not targeted towards the mainstream. A proper review of LP reviews it based on it's own merits, it simply says this band is awesome you should go see it and stuff and everybody does.
