Not certain what you mean by DTV. That's an abbreviation for Digital Television. It is usually is for talking about broadcasts signals over the the air. HDTV is a standard for TVs to accept DTV signals.

A DVD that has gone through post processing is going to be better. This is factoring in even before all the "fixes" which are usually made to TV series. There are very few stations that put out high quality transport streams even in Japan. Just because the frame size of a transport stream is 720p does not mean it is better than a 480p IVTCd DVD.

Let's also keep in mind that very few anime are still true 720p in production. Some of the files you see floating out on the net are just upscaled.

HDTV is a system for displaying digital TV. ATSC is the standard for HDTV broadcasts in the USA.

I did, twice.
First for "Scrapped Princess" anime, for editing purpose ... but i eventually used raws from the net since I never managed to get rid of the telecine completely ...
Then for Cowboy Beebop the movie, cause I think it worth it. Depending on the price, I might do the same for Code Geass both seasons DVDs.

I tend to use downloaded footage to edit and buy the show when it comes in Italy (which generally happens much later).
And still, using the downloaded footage over my DVDs isn't always a bad idea, considering how PAL footage tends to look like crap. Heck, the only proper 2:2 telecined show I have on PAL DVD atm is "Michiko e Hatchin", the others are generally interlaced w/ frame blend (although a couple are progressive). But even with this show, I probably should use the BRD rips I have "somehow found", since, well, they have a much higher resolution, which we don't get here since anime on BRD is sort of a dream over here...

PS: Don't start with the "import 'em kthxbai" cause; while I am willing to spend money on anime, there is a limit to everything. If they are licensed over here, I buy the italian DVDs; if they aren't licensed, I don't feel bad about "obtaining" them in other ways.

YOU'RE SO COOL!

Back on topic, a part of me feels like it's an obligation, but only because I edit with anime. If I didn't, I wouldn't feel any obligation at all. But yes, I do buy DVDs to watch and edit. I buy it more to edit, but I have bought only a couple series before watching them because they were on sale and looked like a good anime. So... Yeah.

I bought Bleach R2s to edit with - sold them afterward to make up for part of the ~$350 cost. I'll usually borrow stuff to edit with though. Most of my DVDs are actually gifts and con prizes.
