Well, I'm not rich so I would never buy an anime I don't like.dazza1008 wrote:Has anyone else bought legal DVDs or music they would not otherwise buy, out of a sense of obligation?

I like anime and want to support the industry, that is why I buy even some choppy R4 dvds. Its just a shame that we only get like a fifth of what is available in the U.S.

Re: Has anyone bought LEGAL DVDs out of a sense of obligation?
I've bought music both for the purpose of editing and because of exposure from others' videos. The latter one is purely because I liked the music, the former because I already liked the music and just wanted a higher-quality version (for those that originated from 'sketchier' sources, at least; I buy practically all my music now - and I'm using 'buy' as a catch-all for both physical CDs and 'getting it from Amazon/iTunes/official site, even if it was free').
With anime, it's a mixture of several viewpoints - there's some I've bought purely out of interest without pre-viewing, some I bought purely because I loved the series, and at least one case where I bought it purely for editing (the Eva Renewal Films R2 set; I already had the crappy Manga Entertainment R1s).
'Legal obligation' doesn't enter into it so much for me as does the assurance I'm working with the highest-possible quality I can (same goes for audio; ripped from CD as PCM if possible, otherwise iTunes [Plus, if available at the time; not really relevant now, though] or Amazon). So for me, 'quality obligation' is closer to the heart of it.

I had to buy region 2's of Naruto because the series wasn't out here yet and I would never work with fansubs.

Re: Has anyone bought LEGAL DVDs out of a sense of obligation?
Nope, and I probably never will.
First, I only buy the series I like. I am not (much) ashamed to admit that I download fansubs. I just have too much free time and too little money (and when I have money, it usually goes into buying anime and manga - little self-satisfaction), but I am just not the person whou could work with few series only, I have to choose from wide array of anime.
And secondly - why would I edit with some anime I don't like? That just doesn't work with me, so every anime I edit with has a potential of me buying it - it just depends on when I get enough money to get to it~

Well I never buy music. I only buy some DVDs.
Of course I watch fansubs! How the hell else am I supposed to watch new series? Not every series get's released out here!

LOL at anyone using TV caps when DVD footage is available.
I can forsee an increase in people sourcing from H264 Bluray rips happening though.
But really if you don't own some copy of the sources your're working with when they are available then you probably aren't involved in any fan endeavor and are just doing it in the hopes to obtain EPEEN +1.
The only thing I would excuse from the above is someone making a Various video just so they can have a fuckton of footage or that one 5 second specific scene from series XYZ which is the only reason you would buy the show. People have been covering those 2 options for years via rentals or borrowing from friends. Downloaded footage just makes people lazy about it as opposed to years ago (assuming it's out on DVD).
