PLease help me filezilla is really pissing me off

i've justed started using filezilla because cuteftp had a 30 day trial. I read the guide how to upload and i still have problems. I type in the host perfectly the username perfectly password perfectly and i still get an "error or could not connect to server or connection refused by server. I have the transfer mode on passive and still i get these errors. Please i have a video i would really like to share with the org please help me.

Did you turn off any firewall(s) you may have?
