Several styles!

Post by Megamom » Sat Apr 18, 2009 8:52 pm

Ok ... boys in the world of AMVs many editors, each editor has his style, and there are few who have their own style. This is a question that I want to share with everyone!

The question is:
You can use several styles?

My answer:
I can not, for example, I could not make a good AMV of action, or a good comedy AMV!

I think my style is a mixture of several different styles and influences from other publishers. It's nothing definite, I think that the most original style throughout The.org, is to Copycat_Revolver.

You can use several styles?
&
Editor, with more original style?

Two questions ... I expect answers!

Does not really having a style or not editing enough to develop a style count?

I cannot use a style different from my current one. But I'm still molding myself as an editor so my style may still change.

I'm quite certain you could make a good action video or comedy video if you tried. I'm still of the mind that every single editor can make a video with whatever genre they want. Sometimes they try something once, if it doesn't work out, they don't try it anymore. How do you think a person gets good at something? Fall off the horse, get on again! Three years ago, I had several editors trying to convince me that I could not edit action. While then it may have been true, now I'd have to disagree. :P

I'm having to agree with Ileia on this one; if you try, then you can make an action AMV. I used to do only romance/drama type AMVs, but the style I have currently, it can be molded to accompany an action AMV, a comedy AMV, or a romance one. After always trying to make an action AMV, then one day getting the feel of it, I made it so that I could use my style in an action AMV.

I think that, once you get a feel of an action or comedy AMV, in your case, you can make more and more.

In my case, most of my earliest videos were action.

I don't see style as being synonymous with genre. Style is merely the eccentricities each editor brings to the table - their individual quirks, process of decision making, etc. Sometimes it's possible to mimic a certain 'style' based on how you think you can reconstruct another editor's choices on a particular video, but not to replicate exactly to the letter. It has nothing to do with how one goes about treating other genres.

I think it is definitely possible to copy another person's style... I had to do it once for a project copying the Japanese director Ozu. Just watch someone's videos and write down highly specific things they do... then try to put them all in your video. In fact, copying someone else is a good way to get started in any art.

However, combining styles is tricky, because a style is a set of preferences that hopefully unify to convey an idea. If you mix two styles. you're really probably saying something completely different than either style. What would you get if you combined the styles of an editor known for extremely simple and slow editing with an editor known for fast-paced, effects-heavy editing? Probably something jarring to watch. Or a dull compromise.

Some unique styles that come to mind:
Nostromo
Jbone
Kamoc
Beowulf (is arrogant a style?...)

Style is not the same as genre. Often the only difference between an editors dance and drama vid is if they use depressing footage/song or not. Not to pick on chii, but look at Resonant Discord. Major parts of it are edited like an upbeat dance vid, it's the song and the footage that keeps it from being dance. IIRC her drama vids are the same, but none of them seem to be previewed yet and I ain't about to download one just to verify my memory is right (2 days and preview has already spoiled me). So her style seems to be pretty much the same regardless of the genre. Chii's just a well known offhand example, she's not the only one like this. I think the majority of editors only have one style actually.

That being said, my default style is moronic comedy but at times I've tried, and mostly failed, different styles. I can do a passable job at being a hack copy of someone else's style if I still down and analyze their videos, but that doesn't really count. Especially since I only do that when I'm making a moronic comedy/parody mocking them. For genres it is really unlikely you'll ever see me do an action or typical drama vid. I've tried it. I sucked at it. I don't like doing it enough to put forth the work to not suck at it.

As far as most unusual style, I don't know. Pretty much anyone who is different enough from 'normal' vids just gets credited with having their own style. I'm more impressed by people who actually have varied styles than one unique style anyway. Pumping out vid after vid with the same style, no matter how original it was to begin with, gets old. Eventually they become a nostro.
