I'm curious, did anyone actually boycott it? I know earlier it was mentioned people could probably email to request their vid be removed from the contest, did anyone actually do so?

If people feel that strongly about it, it is their right to do whatever they think is fair. I dislike vocal protest, but it would have probably been more effective than boycott in this case - you can just walk on the silent ones, they don't complain and they don't give you bad PR - you can hide and spin their actions any way you like and sweep it all under the rug.

Let me start off by saying that I’m disappointed at a few people here that they would immediately think about boycotting the con and even more so the AMV contest. Sakura-Con in general has gone quite far in supporting AMVs in both a dedicated AMV room and the contest. In fact, this year the dedicated AMV room was one of the biggest (if not THE BIGGEST with seating at 840)... Talking about boycotting or not supporting the contest only hurts all those who put so much time in the doing the contest and the AMV room and hurts OUR community more then trying to punish the con. I really wonder if this is how people would react if Anime Central or better yet, AWA did something like this. Would this mean we should boycott and cut support for them as well if it were to happen there?
If your only involvement with Sakura-Con (or ACen, or AWA, or whatever con) is in the AMV contest, and you disagree with something that con has done -- sure, why not? Your boycott is criticism of an action done by a party that represents the convention.

As you said, it's not an effective strategy, as it levels criticism against people who (likely) had nothing to do with the offending action. But nothing makes ACen or AWA or any convention special.

Well, I guess I answered my "why not?" question, but the point that no convention is special remains, as small as it is.

People have boycotted AMV contests for far worse reasons historically speaking. I actually miss seeing some of the old drama posts about AX and how they screwed AMV creators and thus they will never get submissions ever again. Or the posts from people who won't submit to a contest anymore because their video got cut or was "screwed" out of an award.

It is good to point out that Sakura con gave AMVs a big room for presentation at the con this year. People should know about that and I bet some here didn't.

To me what people should ask themselves personally is do they want to submit to a contest. Some people don't submit to certain contests because
-They don't like the contest rules
-They don't like the contest coordinators
-They don't like the convention
-They know they will get their ass kicked in competition
-etc

On the flip side to what Vlad says I don't believe in supporting a contest/con which you personally disagree with on a matter of principle. I do not necessarily feel that creators have to be in the business of supporting AMV contests they have a disagreement with regarding some point.

To be honest I'm surprised AMVs haven't been nerfbatted or completely removed from several large conventions. I mean if legal IP concerns are even a thought why take the risk?

I don't disagree in principle, but I don't agree to not support a contest you may not have any problems with just on the basis that the some other department at the con did something else you may not agree with.. It that was the case I would not of been sending anything to ACen or AWA for a long time  But in fact I have nothing against the AMV portions at that cons so I support them.

Darn. I was hoping for some ACen AMV hate :) . There has been a lack of quality convention contest drama these last few years. I invite anyone attending ACen to visit me in the AMV room so we can come up with a emergency drama plan for April 1 next year ^_^

P.S. Whoever made that no 10 hour reg line comment on their ACen submission made me LOL
