What is your opinion as to why anime is nerdy?

I've been hearing it a lot, "Anime is nerdy" or "Watching anime is nerdy." The only thing I can think of is the "anime is my life"kind of fans make it seem nerdy with your figurines and your cos play and your posters and lifesize pillows in shape of a girl.

Obsession with fantasy is nerdy. Showing it off in everyday life is nerdier.

Why stop at that? The truly ignorant say cartoons are for kids. I'm obsessed with anime but i'm not huge on paraphenilia, it's not really worth it to have pointless merchandise. The source material (anime and manga) is good enough for me.

I don't think anime is nerdy.

On the other hand, you may have fans of anime who are nerdy. That doesn't make the hobby itself nerdy.

There's nothing basically nerdy about anime itself (or figurines or cosplay for that matter), but, like all hobbies and interests, it can be taken to an extreme.

It's different, and it's a minority interest (when compared to stuff like soap operas or reality tv).
That makes it easy to make fun of. The "nerdy" kids are mostly the ones who by some means show that they are into anime, and so anime is lumped in with the other "nerdy" things.

It doesn't help that the most anime exposure the majority have are Pokemon, Digimon, etc...
which leads people to think that all anime is just kiddy stuff from Japan (if only we could get something like Elfen Lied into a network's primetime lineup)

It's because people who like anime tend to like other nerdy stuff like high-end PC games and D&D. We also tend to be smarter and we are knowledgable in things that most people couldn't begin to understand. People call us nerds to overshadow their own deficiencies in what we excel in.

As the other said before, anime is not nerdy. Anime is an own culture, that includes j-music, visuel kei, cosplay, etc.

I think a lot of different reasons can be given here, few examples.

1. Most people that can truly say they are a anime fan watch it online and spend hours on a computer, to many that would be considered a nerdy thing to do, so i think the fact its become associated with computers may have some effect to it.

2. All the cos play and w/e...for some people its a neverending star wars atm and lets be honest, there are star wars nerds, and then theres anime nerds, ig you've seen a ton of different anime and have corrected people on the names of characters or locations, well then your getting to a high point in anime nerdum O:.

3. Not to say this is true for everyone, but most people i know that like anime, are what would be considered a "nerd" at school.

On a side note i think this also depends on location, and how the people around you act. If everyone you know in rl is also on a comp a whole lot they might just consider it a hobby and you wont be considered a nerd.

All around i get what your saying and theres no really good reason why if you ask me, but then again who cares. Everyone likes there own stuff, anime is just more popular and gets looked at differently i think. I know some people think its nerdy because its from japan and..well im sure we all know the nerdy asian stuff. But yeah, personally i dont care what other people think about this.

Double post, sorry but i must agree with this too, many kids were exposed to those animes as kids and that is considered the standard by many i think, and yeah, elfen lied or something like that would probably changed their minds on it a little if you ask me.
