Sakura-Con &Tekkoshocon AMV Room Coundown Survey!

Post by Vlad G Pohnert » Wed Mar 04, 2009 12:25 am

Hi All,

This year in the AMV rooms I run at both Tekkoshocon (Pittsburg) and Sakura-Con (Seattle) I would like to do something new and fun in the form of a countdown. The concept is that we countdown sort of a top 30 AMV videos theme with number cards and commentary between each video in the style of what MTV’s music video countdown use to be like or some of the top countdowns down by radio stations during holidays, etc.

However, instead of just taking only me and my staff favorites, I would like to ask from members of the org here what they would consider some of the best AMVs from now to back to the early 90s (or maybe even 80s if there for the few that can still be shown). Video that you feel stood, or will stand the test of time or just represent of the best of the best of our craft. This is all to be in fun and as such is not meant to be the decisive best 30 videos nor is it to replace neither any top AMV lists here nor anywhere else.

As I want the final list of AMVs to be used in the countdown to be a surprise for the cons (the two cons are only a week apart on the opposite sides of the country), I would please ask NOT TO POST THEM HERE, but e-mail them to me at amvs@tekkoshocon.com.

In order to try to have representation form all the years of AMV making, I’ve come up with the following method, and I will basically look at working out the videos order based on total numbers of video suggestions from each of the listed years (as I know the further we go back, the less that will be listed).

SO, from the following years, you can list up to five videos. For anything prior to 2001, you can list more (but try to keep it under 10 if possible):

2008 to current
2007
2006
2005
2004
2003
2002
2001
Pre 2001

If your not sure on the year an AMV was made, just list them from what you remember and I’ll look at ensuring they end up in the correct year. Again this is all in fun and just meant to have some involvement from members here. (Hell, the Cool countdown cards alone will take me some time!).

I’ll list what I played after the cons here so for all those who do send me something,

Thanks in Advance!

Sadly, there are some of us old enough to remember when "M" actually stood for "music". And some of us old enough to have watched "Video Killed the Radio Star" the first time it aired.

Who would have thought it'd turn in to "MTV killed the music video"?

They also used to play full music videos at 3 in the morning, but last time I checked they don't even play 30 seconds of a whole music video. VH1 also have(/had) countdowns, and they have that awesome British guy who narrates it. Or at least I think he was British...

Also, you can super search the videos you have already downloaded (locally) and filter them by year they premiered.

This is just a general suggestion and I'm sure it'll be met with some criticism (even I will admit it's not perfect), but why not just use the VCAs from those years as a baseline. Those were 'the best' videos per category as voted on by the community (right here).

Now of course (as I said), it's not a perfect benchmark, but I think it'd be a really easy way to get a list of (mostly) good videos year-to-year (like you wanted). Even better, maybe even do finalists if you need more per year.

But then it wouldn't be a surprise!

Except, of course, for all the ones people were sure were going to win each year but didn't even end up in the contest due to opt-in rules.

Hey - now that Sakura Con is over, could you post the countdown list? I wasn't familiar with all the anime sources used, and I'd like to look some of them up - but that depends on being able to find the AMVs!

One of many examples.
