Troubles reinstalling Vegas on Vista x64

Post by AaronAMV » Sat Feb 14, 2009 3:47 pm

Alright, so I installed it a while ago, but just now realized that if I go to Render, change the format to .avi, and try to customize the file, I can't. Vegas just stops responding. Oh, by customizing I mean make the codec Lagarith.

Now I try to reinstall Vegas, and it won't install properly. Everytime I run it, it says that the rundll32 file stopped working. Then, it says Sony Vegas has stopped working. Anyone know the problem? And I know, Vista sucks. Oh, I'm also using Vegas 7.0.

Also, I try to change the compression in VDub/Mod, it says it stopped responding and I'm forced to close it. But that's related to my problem... I think.

Great, another person who blames their problems on Vista. (If I had a dime for everytime I heard that...) I was using Vista x64 for the last 6 months and just went back to XP a few weeks ago to determine what I like better. And Vista is hands down faster and just more pleasant to use. If you do have problems with programs in Vista, it is more the third party's fault for not working with Vista or 64-bit properly. Hell, standard systems you buy at stores come with 64-bit frequently now. Vista is more than 2 years old now, so blaming Vista is just stupid. Yeah, Vista does have issues, but so does XP and every other operating system.

Ok, on to your problem. Being that Vegas requires .NET, make sure you're updated with that (there was just a big .NET update this week I believe). And of course, make sure you have all Windows updates. And being that Lagarith is being odd, uninstall and reinstall it using the installer version. If still having problems, reinstall Vegas and try these steps if still having issues.

1. Turn UAC off. (Turn back on if it doesn't help after all the steps, UAC is important! You can have it on, but silent using TweakUAC)
2. Run always as administrator (right click on icon on desktop>properties>compatibility>check the run as administrator box)
3. If you get a "Rundll32" error that closes the program: Run program in "Compatibility Mode XP SP2" if you still encounter issues.

My question is did it work just fine before? Also, can you render out to different formats?

If it's still being stupid, try a trial version of Vegas 8.0c or Vegas 8.1 (64-bit). However, the 64-bit version is really only useful for DV, HDV, and AVCHD workflows, it does not non-standard codecs in my experience. Just don't save the project file in the new version (make a copy) because it might make it invalid with 7.0.

Heh...

Alright, back to Vegas. I turned UAC off and restarted my computer, but I tried to go to the compatibilities tab, and I couldn't check the 'run as administrator' box. However, I did just right click and press 'Run as Administrator.' It still didn't work-- the Rundll32 was still wrong. Then I tried to run the program under "Compatibility Mode XP SP2" and it's still happening. Now I'm going to turn UAC back on in silent mode and restart my computer.

As stated, the editing program itself worked fine, no errors except for when I tried to change the codec. I would select the .avi container, open the custom options and from there it went kablooey. I would go to the video tab and Vegas would stop responding. I'm not sure if I could go to the video tab in different formats because I've never tried. Honestly, I was just rendering the video uncompressed, but now I can't even get Vegas to open.

I heard that the media manager is known to cause issues, so I completely uninstalled Vegas 7.0 and the Media Manager... I tried to go reinstall Vegas, but there is no way to purely just not install the media manager. Instead, I just press cancel before the installation appears to have started. I go my programs list, and it's not there like it was before. Then I open up vegas and the same thing keeps happening.

I got the info on the Media Manager from this thread on the Vista x64 forums.

I never use the media manger. In the Options>Preferences>General tab, I always uncheck "Enable Media Manger (requires restart)".

That thread is people using beta versions of Vista, but the Rundll32 is a common issue on all versions of Windows. It tends to be difficult to track down. I'd uninstall and reinstall anything like .NET, J#, SQL, etc. Just make sure you find a download for it before uninstalling these. But, at this point you might try posting in the Sony Creative Software support forums and/or other video or computer support forums.

Also, I've had other friends have the stupid Rundll32 error come up with games and other applications and they just couldn't figure out what was causing it. At this point a reinstall may be in need. Yeah, saying just reinstall Windows sucks and there might be a way to fix it without doing so, but sometimes the time spent trying to figure that out takes longer than reinstalling the OS and apps. I like to reinstall every 6-12 months anyways to avoid what people call "bit rot". My last reinstall of the OS, all apps, data, and settings tweaking took only 2 days.

But I'd try more specific support forums since there are people more familiar with these kind of problems.

That would be fine, but I can't start Vegas up. :/
It gets to Initializing DirectX plug-ins, and the Rundll32 error kicks in. Could that DirectX plug-in have anything to do with it? And if I try to un/re-install any .NET, etc. applications, how would I know which are which?

If I want to re-install my OS, how do I do that? And will it screw all my programs up?

Just insert the OS CD into your drive and when the computer boots, go to your BIOS, change your boot settings so that the computer boots from your Optical drive. When it loads, it will wipe your C: HDD and then install. I think that's how mine worked. Somehow a new HDD had an OS already installed. Answer me that one.

And messing up your programs, if that includes having to re-install, than yes. You will be left with a blank slate. Any settings or saved things on that drive will be gone.
