I'm guessing the companies restrict the use of certain scenes, so the amv's and trailers probably could be better if they wanted them to be.

That coupled with mandates to stick to simple cuts and fades (that i recall hearing from someone that was involved in such products) pretty much limit what you can really do.

Yeah, I can see a lot of potential go down the drain with that. For instance, if they have access to the original animation... they wouldn't have to create any masks
Some pretty kickarse stuff could be made, yet I've never seen it done.
They probably have caps on the amount of sync as well.

There are two character profile AMVs on the last Fate Stay Night dvd, one on Saber and the other on Archer. I actually quite enjoyed them. Can definitely see the difference between industry vids and ones made here. Though I have to prefer the way they used that grunge AE effect everyone on this site seems to get off on

Really? I found them somewhat lacking, and with badly overdone effects. To each his own.

Not quite an AMV, but I remember going to the theater awhile back and seeing this video with footage from the animated "Amazing Spider Man" set to this rock song...it played during the time before the previews, and as I recall it was actually pretty lame :/

saber marionette J DVDs had some AMVs in them they were not that bad.

They're a bit different - at least 99% of them are using animation specifically drawn for the OP/ED sequences. It's rare to find even small segments that are reused in the actual series.

On your mark and the Daicon IV opening are worth a mention. Neither was done for a specific anime series so it's not quite the same but both are music videos made by anime creators (or in one case, people who go on to be an anime company)
