Norton has a habit of screwing itself up (and your computer/programs too)
Viruses can infect other files once they gain control of your computer. While that may not be the answer to what happened it is a possibility

In theory they could have, but I don't recall a mac exploit ever being created (well, not yet anyway). However there was at least one exploit in the wild which was created for Windows.

There have actually been a few of vulnerabilities that included code execution to affect the mov container:

• In 2005 there was one that affected QuickTime 7.0.3
• In 2007 there was one that affected QuickTime 7.3
• and finally a new one was discovered only a few weeks ago in the current version; Quicktime 7.5.5 (another ref is here), which hasn't been patched yet.

In addition to the above there was a mov based annoyance circulating Facebook a while back which used an HREF track in the mov container to point your browser at some Javascript which attempted to raid your Facebook profile data.

All the above said, I still like the mov container - and it's sister the mp4.

and finally a new one was discovered only a few weeks ago in the current version; Quicktime 7.5.5 (another ref is here), which hasn't been patched yet.

Scratch that, it has now been patched.
