Dude. Fair use and grey areas, ever heard 'bout those stuff?Vax wrote:I was ripping some DVDs. At first I was real excited, until I put the .vobs in dgindex and read the redistribution message. The risk would be a fee of 2,500 dollars and up to 5 years in a federal prison. That just punched my motivation to edit in the balls. I kept the .vobs just in case I manned up. Mainly what I want to discuss is how do you guys get around that and have the will to still edit and upload your videos. I haven't edited for a while now and I want to, but as of now I really don't feel as if it's worth it.

Don't worry, if amvs where 100% illegal, amv contests would be banned at anime conventions, don't you think?

Until there is no sure law, they remain a grey area and as such you don't really have to worry.

Re: Having The guts
This thread amused me.
Seriously, what copyright stuff are you talking about? My DVD Player of choice can skip it, I rip only the episodes itself and the sub and RAW groups don't include them!
They can't hurt your mind if you don't see them~

Re: Having The guts
I think the only people that have the right to care about it are the anime creators. So as long as your amv doesn't suck, it can only serve as good advertisement. I still think they have the right to complain about it, but... hmm... let's put it this way... amvers typically like the anime and music they use... so I don't think the anime creators would be wise to sue their biggest fans. Now if you slander the anime, that might be a different story.

Re: Having The guts
A while ago. It was fairly recently though, the Roberts Court decided it. I don't have the case number on hand or anything, and I actually think the person who was defending lost because they did other things, and the court did seem to feel that DVD ripping in addition to other actions could be or is copyright infringement. I remember correctly, they just clarified and said that several of the steps one takes to infringe, by themselves each, are not infringement. We still infringe because we have intent to distribute or something like that... I dunno. I guess I'd have to research it more, and honestly, it really is important beyond the fact that the OP does not need to worry about LOL FBI for ripping DVDs.Pwolf wrote:orly? when was this? i've been living under a rock for like a year so, i dunno -_-

If I recall correctly, and it ISN'T important. Preview doesn't work if you see what you want to see before you hit submit.Kionon wrote:stuff.

Re: Having The guts
Okay, oddly enough I just got back from a big FBI meeting a few minutes ago, that included my state's director and some people from the cyber crime division. (don't ask) It seriously freaked me out. Granted the mostly talked about pedophiles and idenity theft. But the amount they talked about "No criminals can hid from us, they will be brought of justice." made me nervous, even if it is just motivational speaking.
Nothing really to add, just thought that was cool and ironic.
