Text... Transformation?

Basically I want this for a school project, I remember seeing a tutorial on it some where but can't seem to find it.

Anyway, I want the text to keep changing until it gets to a certain year. Actually... Now that I think about it, I want it to look similiar to the beginning of Time Waits For No Onewith the text changing.

So I would have the numbers changing until it gets to

What's wrong with doing it frame by frame?

I don't own Sony Vegas, but it can be easily accomplished in AfterEffects by adding the text layers + altering them through the timeline until you get your desired effect.
