AMVs being used in video mixtapes?
First post, so hello AMV community!
I found this community after asking (on 4Chan) about some AMV clips I came across on a video mixtape I downloaded. After the obligatory stream of pointless replies I was directed to this community and I'm loving every bit of it. I have downloaded the AMV Hell mixtapes and enjoyed them VERY MUCH, and am now making myself familiar with VirtualDub, AviSynth and the likes, in hope to contribute something creative and enjoyable to the AMV world. By the way, I also would like to extend MAJOR KUDOS to the people who did the guides on http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/ -- these are by far the most helpful and comprehensable guides I came across on the web.
Anyway, on to my question: how do you feel about your AMV clips being used in other (non-AMV comunity) projects? Is the maker of Retard-O-Tron (where I found out about AMVs) on this forum as well? I couldn't find any mention of it when searching. Now that I'm working on AMVs of my own, I start to wonder how to distribute them, and/or if it would help to have a video mixtape include them.

Generally, using clips from AMVs to make your own is frowned upon, unless it is in a parodying or joking manner.
And what the hell is a mixtape?

I have been reading a lot on this forum lately, and I'm well aware that you should be using an original source for your videos -- something I'm definately planning to adhere to. Actually, this is a real good excuse for me to buy more DVDs
I have been using some downloaded stuff just to practise editing, but that is solely for private use.
About video mixtapes, I guess Wikipedia explains it best: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_mixtape . I came across these a while ago and have downloaded a couple of 'em. Makes for a good "party tape", plus it lead me to discover AMVs.

I think you might see AMV Hell in a wrong light. We call AMVs like this "hell-type" videos or something like that. For AMV Hell a lot of editors made those short clips. It´s not a collection of parts from other videos, the clips where made for this mix.
I think I´m alright if somebody uses a few scenes out of my videos for a mixtape as long as he gives credit in some form. At least the editor shouldn´t say that he made all the clips himself.

yeah mixtapes (lol at the youngin's what's a mix tape)
I don't see any reason why anyone should be upset that there video is put in a compolation of other videos ... I mean we DID upload them to the internet for people to download and watch ... A mix tape is nothing more that a portable Video playlist.

I actually came across retard-o-tron a couple of weeks ago and thought it was pretty awesome. As one of the creators of AMV Hell, I was rather surprised to see that quite a large number of clips from AMV Hell 3 had been put into it. I don't really have a problem with this, personally, but it would have at least been nice to have known about it.

Same here... I never would of made it this far without that guide and I'd like to extend my thanks if by some odd chance they come across this thread.beehive wrote:I also would like to extend MAJOR KUDOS to the people who did the guides on http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/ -- these are by far the most helpful and comprehensable guides I came across on the web.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

Re: AMVs being used in video mixtapes?
That's why I was so surprised about finding no mention at all about video mixtapes or the Retard-O-Tron videos on this forum. I'm originally into cult/horror movies, a scene where video mixtapes are pretty well known, and these mixtapes are a lively source of discussion. The downside about video mixtapes is that they don't really mention the source of the clip (but they don't try to hide it either, the watermarks are all still visibile in the AMV Hell 3 parts). Apparently the Retard-O-Tron original DVD has a subtitle track that mentiones the source (don't know about AMV Hell though?), and the guy who made it always answers questions on horror forums about the clips that are used.Zarxrax wrote:I actually came across retard-o-tron a couple of weeks ago and thought it was pretty awesome.
