Favorite Metal/Rock Videos [Please Read First Post]
Please Read
The purpose of this thread is to expose some of the best Rock/Metal videos you think there are. Normally metal and rock bands don't get enough money from their record companies to spend on videos so they usually suck. But, there are exceptions and there are few cases were intelligent concepts and good editing makes up for the lack of money. So post some of the videos you think that deserve more attention. And I don't have something against high budget videos as long as it is rock or metal. But keep in mind that this thread is about the artistic value and not about standard "see-the-band-play" type of video unless they do have something extravagant which actually makes it something special. And who knows maybe you'll see something inspiring to integrate into own videos, or find a ban/song you like.
Pain - Just Hate Me - Link
Strapping Young Lad - Almost Again - Link
Dark Tranquillity - Monochramatic Stains -Link
These are just three examples for what I mean, there are tons of great underground videos to be found on several streaming sites besides the tube.
So go and post away.

I know exactly what you mean.
I've heard a lot people talking how bad most 'real' music videos are compared to amv's, but infact there are some great Videos in between that show a huge artistic value.
Imho it's really a nice idea to show and discuss these videos to prove there are actually some real diamonds in the huge mass of music videos.
Isis - Not In Rivers But In Drops - Link
A Perfect Circle - Weak and Powerless - Link
Between the Buried and Me - Alaska - Link
Limp Bizkit - Eat You Alive - Link
These are the Videos That were stuck in my mind.
Oh, and I don't really need lose a word about the amazing Tool music videos, or do I?

Well the Buried and Me video was pretty generic in my eyes since the sideplot didn't really feature something that others do not. And the idea behind the song and or video wasn't really something out of the ordinary. I don't see what's special about it. Mind explaining it to me?
The Limb Bizkit one. Well, I somehow see why, it could be a bit of a movie and I love the cameramovement and basic idea of it. I always liked it. Thanks for making me watch it again.
Judith, yeah. Aestheticism reduced at absurdum. Not my cup of tea but a great video I must admit.
I hadn't seen the Isis one yet. But somehow this is what I meant by editing makes up for the lack of money. I mean it's pretty difficult to set up a video for an instrumental (or a song with only a few lines) and more difficult for a song with such a duration. Actually the video is pretty good however it is way to slowpaced for an Isis song in my opinion but I like the effects and simple methods they used to alter the footage.

I love that video.. It's one of those creepy yet pretty emotional videos out there, just like the song itselfKevmaster wrote:A Perfect Circle - Weak and Powerless - Link
I can't help but just love these MBV videos:
My Bloody Valentine - Soon: http://tinyurl.com/5va4ah
It's not just because of Bilinda!
My Bloody Valentine - You Made Me Realise: http://tinyurl.com/6elujj
I didn't know there was a video to this song. But that makes sense though. One of the catchiest songs from the early MBV era. Chaotic stuff.. And very retro at it.

As I said, these were only a few videos that were still stuck in my mind. I think I mainly liked the idea behind the video and it somehow inspired me in one of my own videos (which was never finished), I guess that's why.Warheart wrote:Well the Buried and Me video was pretty generic in my eyes since the sideplot didn't really feature something that others do not. I can see where you're coming from with saying it ain't really so special.

I know this may sound like a "fan boy" reply, but the first videos that come to mind are KAMELOT's Ghost Opera and Rule The World. Visually, they are the most creative/artistic videos I've seen, very theatrical, which goes with Kamelot's image.
There have been a few others I've enjoyed like SYMPHONY X's Set The World On Fire (The Lie Of Lies) and Serpent's Kiss. Even DREAM THEATER's new one, Forsaken, took a unique approach by being animated (or rotoscoped) which I thought was pretty cool.
I can tell you that one of my favorite directors in this field is Patric Ullaeus of Revolver Film Company. His style is rather typical of music videos these days with lots of editing tricks and fancy filter effects, but I like watching what he does for inspiration. His cinematography is also very dynamic.

Ah, crap you can't edit posts in this forum!
I just remembered .... A terrific music video everyone should watch is Poets's of the Fall's "Carnival of Rust" - this was featured in CreativeCow.net's Music Video article: The Works of Stobe Harju & Eki Halkka. I never heard of this band but Harju even directed NIGHTWISH's new video, The Islander, which I really like and should be seen - a terrific atmospheric ballad.
Another video directed by Harju for the band Poets's of the Fall is Lift, which isn't as amazing as "Carnival of Rust", but still another fine work.
Enjoy!

Here are a few videos that I enjoy that aren't just your stereotypical "let's keep the band on screen as long as bloody possible" videos. They all keep some sort of story or plot line.
I quite enjoy Underoath's video for Reinventing Your Exit. Ok, it's not a lesser known band, by any means, but I thought the plot, if you will, of the video was oddly unique. I dunno, it's not the best example around, but I just enjoy it.
Thrice's video for Image of the Invisible has always been a favorite of mine. Again, there's a plot to follow instead of just having to watch the band jam for almost 5 minutes.
One of my favorite bands here recently is a little known band called House of Heroes. They just recently released their sophomore album as well as the video to their song In the Valley of the Dying Sun. I can't help but love this video just because I love the story the song tells. The musical style is a bit different from most (or all) of what's been posted in this thread so far, but it is rock, so it fits the topic guidelines.
None of them are particularly artistic, per se (depending on how you want to define artistic), but they all have actual concepts beyond just "pimp the band members at all costs."

I must say both videos impressed me. I can't say so sure, but it really looks like those videos had a quite big budget and they made good use of it. I'm glad you made me watch those. I really like how the Carnival of Rust one supports the actual meaning of the song in a very pretentious way some might not even see it at first sight. The other one is rather standard but I like the song and the video isn't particulary bad.
And I actually took a look at what videos the Revolver company edtied and found that I already knew 75% of them if not more. And you're absolutely right saying those are good inspiration since they use a ton of effects which we can actually rebuild. Maybe it is because they use alot of aftereffects and namely shake and glow, but not in the way some editors here might use'em but in a way more distinct and effective way. It's like they use eyecandy instead of fancy locations or gimmicks. I like their videos not only for the music.
