You're probably right. So what? Is your own self worth really so low that the opinion of random jackasses on the internet is at all important?

Just yesterday by merely reading chatter about what the super cool kids are doing. Bah! I'm going to continue doing things my own way and whoever doesn't like it can piss off. ^_^

Helpful criticism is fine. Sometimes even...helpful. Nevertheless, I am aware that I'm not going to please everyone no matter what I do so I'm not even going to bother trying. People like what they like and don't what they don't. Fair enough. If you just flatly don't like what I do that's fine. Just don't bother wasting your time or mine with pointless insults and remarks like "it's just not my thing".

but "needs more effects" when you set out to make an effectless video isn't helpful O.o

That I agree with. Special effects should be used when they're actually needed. Adding them in just to get brownie points is silly, in my opinion.

I made AMVs for over a year before I even started putting in special effects of any kind. For the first year, I just picked songs I liked and matched scenes to the lyrics, enjoying the video for the scenes in it.

Once you feel comfortable with regular editing, then you can get a fancy program with effects. But effects are best used tastefully. I've seen a lot of videos with effects just for the sake of effects, and sometimes it's better to have no effects at all. Tasteful effects look very nice, but I would start off small, with Windows Movie Maker or a program like that. Use simple crossfades for transitions, and the video will still turn out nice if you put time into it. ^^

Yup, just do what you like, and if people rip it apart, they rip it apart. It's hard to not take that personally, but try to realize that they're telling you what you can improve upon. Think about that and then press onward to bigger better things :)
