Severe Quality Problems! How Do I Fix This?

Post by TwilightChrono » Wed Oct 15, 2008 9:35 pm

Well, for the record, I am making a new AMV, but I am at a loss for now, as I have come across some quality issues that I really need some help in fixing.

For the record, the format that these are in is called:

(SVCD) MPEG 2

Yes, they are DVD Rip's. So, before anyone asks, I figured that I would get that out of the way.

Here are some screen shot's for my severe problem area's:

THIS IS PROBABLY THE WORST ONE:

HERE IS ANOTHER PROBLEM AREA:

AND HERE IS THE LAST AREA I NEED HELP WITH:

I would also, like to get rid of some of the blurriness as well, but again, don't know fo a script that get's rid of blurriness. I would really like some help with this matter. There is a hell of a whole lot of grain, but, I don't know of any scripts that can get rid of it, and basically, I would just like this to turn out as best as I can get it. If someone could help me out regarding this, it would be a big help. I'm looking for some major script help here. Thanks so much.

SVCD mpeg 2 is your problem, that footage isn't salvageable.

Yes, they are DVD Rip's.
Why on earth would you rip a DVD to an SVCD-compliant stream?

That's generally what <a href="http://www.aquilinestudios.org/avsfilte ... rpeners</a> are for. And I mean general sharpeners, not edge enhancers, line darkeners, or anything else.

That's generally what smoothers are for, though some are meant specifically for grain removal (such as <a href="http://www.aquilinestudios.org/avsfilte ... nMedian</a> and <a href="http://www.aquilinestudios.org/avsfilte ... veGrain</a>). However, I don't see a lot of grain in the screenshots you provided; I just see blocky noise and mosquito noise that look like they've also been blurred.

The Mesquito noise....can you tell me how to get rid of it. I just did some example scripts, and it looks a hell of a whole lot better than what I originally tried...thanks Scintilla.

Also, do you have any specific scripts or filters that you would recommend for blurriness? I'm not too familiar with all the advanced sharpeners out there. Also, any filters in particular I should use for the Mesquito noise?

Anymore additional help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I find fluxsmoothST() to do the trick for mosquito noise
sharpeners, I hear good things about toon() and limitedsharpenfaster() does good for me

Can you link me to:

fluxsmoothST()
toon()
limitedsharpenfaster()

Apparently I don't have these, because I keep getting an error message that says, no such plugin for whichever one I entered exists. That's what it tells me in VDM when I try to save and refresh.

<a href="http://www.aquilinestudios.org/avsfilte ... xSmooth</a> - <a href="http://www.aquilinestudios.org/avsfilte ... n">Toon</a> - <a href="http://www.aquilinestudios.org/avsfilte ... nFaster</a>

But Toon won't help with your blurriness; it's meant for edge enhancement in animation. LimitedSharpenFaster will do better in that regard.

Sorry for the double post.

I have one more question.

What would be the best filter or script to use, to fix my problem in the first image that I posted? The Inuyasha one.

I think that one is beyond help. There's blocking, which can be taken care of by deblock() but it's a smoother. After that you'd need to use a sharpener, but since so much detail has already been lost the result probably won't look good (perhaps worse)
