Is anyone else bothered by...

The recent trend in cinema aspect ratio?

We had square tv's now we have widescreen tvs to compensate for the 16/9 HD movies and now they create some bullshit AR 2.35/1. Example movie:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0432021/

Have you tried watching that on a widescreen TV? It's small and ugly even on a bigscreen hdtv

I bought a new tv to enjoy the new size movies for 16/9 and now they are starting this bs. I just hope they don’t start using it as a medium for cinema AND I hope anime movies don't follow suite.

Well, it doesn't make much sense to use that format seen from a technical viewpoint and furthermore that movie sucked balls. :P

Ah ic.. I thought it was new, I probably should of looked into it. Oh well either way this AR seems pointless to me. TBH I hate it.

I only brought it up really cause it seems like most of the movies i've seen recently are using it.

I don't mind it. I don't understand the reasoning behind it but still I don't mind it.

I like it. In fact there are some examples of awesomely wide-screened videos. "Lost To Apathy" by Dark Tranquillity was shot in 4:1 iirc.

It's not that it seems like a waste of screen space... I guess it just doesn't seem normal after so many years of 4:3 and 16:9.

Moreover I could understand the usefulness of a very wide screened camera for cinema to give a spherical horizontal vision effect more of that of the human eyes. We see side to side more then we see top to bottom.

I guess it just doesn't look good on a TV. That video was good but the AR still bothered me. I don't notice the 2.35/1 in theaters I guess cause there is no bordered TV behind it. Like for instance I enjoyed the transformers movie and it was 2.35/1 but I watched it with a friend at their house and was awed by how ugly it looked on his HDTV.

Maybe it has something to do with the Black TV background around it that I cant stand, not the fact that it is a waste of TV space. I need to look more into my TV to find out if it has that zoom option that bashar talked about.

I'd go into the specifics on why certain films are Cinematic Widescreen, shows are 16:9 or 4:3, and etc, but it really boils down to the preference of the director. Each aspect ratio allows certain shots, while making others have much less of an impact.

Basically, there's a reason, it's just mostly up to personal preference.

Also, I happen to really like 2.35:1, just personal preference. :P
