Validity of AMVs in college applications.

Post by piedpiper » Thu Sep 25, 2008 5:27 pm

Hi there,

I was wondering if any of you could give me some insight as to how valuable AMVs are as a statement of your artistic expression to an arts college of a good standard.
I can only imagine that they would have to be outstanding to be of some worth, but i'd like to hear what you have to say about it. I've dabbled in graphics for a few years now and i want to take it a step further and i believe learning the professional level programs often used to make these vids and incorporating my work with them would give me an edge when it comes to applying to a University.
Oh and i'm doing my Bachelor's in Computer Science Engineering >.<

I plan on taking my art further after this. I would like to (hopefully) do something as a video editor/animator, gotta find a route that connects the my degree to that somehow...

Any comments?

Thanks

SSJVegita0609 got into his college using amvs and Beowulf became a professional film editor using amvs.

You're good to go.

I believe Jasper could say more on the subject, were she so inclined.

How about any cases of getting fired over AMVs?

i dont think it would help so much with colleges unless they have specific applications that involve submiting something to show your skills. they just dont spend much time on individual applications.

now for a job it could be a different matter, if you're applying for a job that makes use of editing skills then an amv could be a very good way to show your stuff. just make sure it's a kick ass amv heh

In my opinion, switch your major out of Computer Engineering and see if your college offers a Radio/TV/Film/Media major.

If you're going to an art school for CE you're most certainly doing it wrong.

Hmmm, I understand, but i'm speaking of using these applications to expand my options when it comes to preparing a portfolio along with programs like PS, Illustrator, etc that i use often. Not just the program as a stand-alone basis for my applying to the college.

Well, hmm, it does seem kind of obvious that if you want to be a video editor you would send in a CD with your best edited videos/short movies or whatever for which a good command over such applications would be necessary *scratches head...feels kinda stupid*
But when we talk about AMVs specifically, I suppose anime will be appreciated to some extent regardless of school depending on factors such as how universal your video is, as in, how well you could express your ideas to any person not well versed with anime. Well that's atleast how i think it would be. *scratches head again*

But yes, CastorTroy it's good to know that people do land successful careers after being AMV freaks. But my college does not offer any courses in Media. Sadly, switching my stream isn't an option right now.

And Bashar, I'm not going to art school for CE, it just so happens that this is the course i opted for. And I would like to choose my next steps carefully so as not to make the same mistake again. I hope to educate myself as much as possible over the next few years in this field to stand a chance against the formally trained competition.
