What do you call an AMV when you use live action movies?

Post by dma88 » Thu Sep 18, 2008 1:01 pm

first of all, Hi, i'm dma88 and I just joined this forum :D

I've been doing AMV-style videos for a few years, they're all up on youtube. here's a few links:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gC2JQ5WRSBU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4udD8dwi4U
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_q3M22D9LU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofN84ZVeJ-w

the only difference is, I use live action movies instead of anime. Does anyone know what to call that? a LAMV? are there any forums out there for people who edit LAMV's?

I've always been interested in anime, it's just that there's soooo much of it to watch, you'll never get anywhere unless you ahve an anime fan sitting on the couch with you. I had a roommate years ago who was into it, but he was kind of an a-hole. sorry, going off on a tangent :)

so does anyone have any answers to my questions? or can you point me to some anime I would like? I'm sure I can make some good AMV's too, I just don't know where to start

Are there any anime that you've already watched and liked? What's your general taste in movie and such, there's quite a few different genre's to choose from.

Point you to some anime you'll like? Care to share what sort of anime you're into/looking for? Just asking for names of anime is a bit too vague, as I could point you to anywhere from Lucky Star to Evangelion to Bible Black. =\

And yes, those would be LAMV - Live Action Music Videos, and obviously, they don't really belong here. :?

There is this thread for LAMVs. And yes, if you give a genere (futuristic/sci-fi, martial arts, romance, comedy, horror, mech, school, fantasy, etc) and/or the name of something you enjoyed in the past, we could probably point you in the right direction.

I believe they're just called Vids, the community is called Vidding, and the people are Vidders. There is a livejournal community.

But I got all of this second hand from Katie. None of my LAMVs have seen the light of day.

thanks for the replies, and no, i don't mean to post any more off-topic videos :)

one other term I found recently is MMV- movie music video. It seems that AMV's have a much bigger and more active community. There are a ton of random MMV/LAMV/etc on youtube and elsewhere, but not a whole lot of forums. And the forums certainly aren't as active as this one.

As for anime that I would like.. I've only seen ghost in the shell, akira, ninja scroll, a little bit of gundam, a little bit of evangelion, some dragonball/dragonball Z, la blue girl, and a few random others. I'd like to see something dark (so no kiki's delivery service), intellectual, with enough violence/sex where it's appropriate (but probably not too much hentai). The kind of show/movie that says something about life, and makes you think, but not too weird. There are a lot of cultural differences betwen america and japan, so we just don't understand as much about anime as japanese people would.

What I'd really like to see, to be honest, is live-action (or maybe CG) remakes of anime. Like some of the recent comic book movies- spiderman 2, the dark knight, etc, where they give the movie the time, money and attention to really do it justice. (and YES I know they depart from the comics quite a bit, some of that is necessary). Comics, like anime, have all the good story elements in them-- drama, action, style, story, etc. It just takes a mainstream movie to get the mainstream to see that.

So if you could see an anime series/movie given a $200 million budget and made into a really good live action movie that achieves a good balance between satisfying the hardcore fans and the masses, which one would it be?

Full Metal Alchemist sounds right up your ally, not much sex, but a fair amount of violence and a serious plot, it's quite well known.

Also, I believe you'd enjoy death note quite a bit, intellectual, dark, alot of people die, but not to much actual violence per-say. Check it out.

Oh, and LA anime movies have been made (Two were made about death note) but they rarely turn out too good. Hollywood's in the middle of making a DBZ movie, and even with a decent budget, it looks like it's going to suck. :/

Thanks for the suggestions, i'll have to check those out

DBZ's gonna suck? too bad.. there were some very good story elements in that show.. A lot of drama, etc

And not all of the recent comic book movies have been good-- I turned off "daredevil" halfway through because it seemed like a joke.

But look at the difference between "batman and robin" and "the dark knight" and you see what I mean

i always thought that ghost in the shell would make a good live action movie, if done right.
