the next stage of AMV evolution

Post by Jasta85 » Mon Sep 01, 2008 3:03 pm

well, amvs have definitly evolved over time along with technology. in the past simply synch with scenes matching the lyrics or beat along with the usual fade ins/outs and the ever present white or black flashes to match beats were common (still common actually). then lip sync and basic effects started to come in, masks and other stuff. Now we have MADs along with the extreme effects filled amvs such as DecoyOps's technique beat vids, or things like magic pad, Chikabooms vids etc.

what do people think will be the next jump in AMV evolution. one thing i have really wanted to toy with is 3D amvs. have a program come out that can allow you to edit amvs so that when you wear those horrible cheap glasses everything pops out of the screen and into your face. i think i've actually seen a few programs that offer really basic technology using that, but it would be very interesting to have a three dimensional amv to watch.

any other ideas as to what the next stage of amvs may be?

No.

And I don't want to, because it's been getting worse and worse with every "evolution".

Beowulf's probably gonna declare this as the apocalypse of amvs. :P

I'm gonna be a hater and x2 this statement.

I haven't seen that many AMVs that I've really enjoyed and kept on my hard drive since like...2003 or maybe 2001 so if that pattern holds, by 2010 I'll be saving myself some bandwidth ;).

Sure things look more impressive now, but call me 'old school' in that a well-executed yet simple video with a solid concept impresses me a hell of a lot more than ZOMG COOL EFFECTS LOLOLOL or crazy timing. It's sad how few of those videos exist nowadays.

Yeah, videos today don't have plenty of grit.

omg did summone say EVOLUSHUN?!1

I agree with a lot of whats been said here; the current trends tend towards new kinds of videos that I, on the whole, enjoy less than the older generation. Obviously this is a generalisation but it is nonetheless true.

A friend of mine said it well: more AMVs need to be made with class.

i do agree that i dont download and keep as many amvs nowadays as i did in the past, the majority of my collection is old amvs, however occassionally a nice one pops up here and there, and there are a number of effect heavy amvs that also have very good value as far as concept as well.

maybe amvs are following the same trend as movies, in the past, movies HAD to have a good script/plot/acting if they were do to well cause there wasnt much else they had to work with. nowadays you just need to throw in lots of explosions/sex/bad language to get a popular movie. with amvs i guess lots of flashy effects have replaced that.

however, i do beleive that good amvs can continue to be made even with good effects. the percentage of good quality amvs in the total pile has always been very small in the past, that trend will just continue into the future.
