Japan to legalise MADs?

Given their stance on doujinshi I guess it's not too surprising, though the "cyber-district" thing sounds a little odd. Hopefully some stuff gets put back on to Nico Nico Douga in the future.

It's always funny to see some group fighting over the legality of something where making that something illegal can only harm the source.

I can see fighting for the rights of say a feature film, where the idea is to make it criminal to make copies of the film so that people can't watch them for free.

But when the process is applied to people that are only using selected bits and pieces, along with a tune, that can only result in free advertising. It strikes me as peculiar. Especially when it only angers a fan base that would normally be supportive to the product in the first place.

Oh well, I long ago stopped waiting for courts to make any real sense.

I work with a M@D creator. He only identified himself after he saw me editing at work. According to him, M@D creators keep a low profile not out of fear, but because it is part of the philosophy being influenced by being Japanese. Whether he speaks for the entire movement or not, I don't know.

If by cyber district they mean authorized domains on which MADs can legally exist for sharing over the internet, I'm not sure how that can possibly work. Once anything gets on the internet it can spread far beyond its origin. Even streamed media can be saved and shared by anyone who knows how or finds the right tools. In any case, I think this is still good news.
