X2
x3.

The amv's I seem to enjoy the most (and truth be told, the ones I enjoy making the most) are the ones that make a new connection or tell a new story between the song and the anime. Not just an appropriate matching of the two, but one that comes at it from a different angle and makes the connection in a way that might be completely from left field.

In terms of technical editing, there's only so much that can be done within the constraints of the software we use and the limit of the editor's patience to manipulate the images. But imagination applied to amv's can be limitless.

how do you make your amv's? Take a bunch of footage and cut/cross-fade/splice it into a cohesive whole to a song?

Does anyone do anything with After Effects to bring a new dimension to the footage? Have a look at www.videocopilot.net for amazing free tutorials and inspiration. I mean, you could use the camera tracking stuff in AE to plant some anime heads on live-action people. You could create fake 3d corridors with Photoshop and AE, and then attach anime video's on some of the walls, or in the puddles, or something. Get the camera mcving about.

Or what about collaborating with some talented artists (like on deviant or something)? Doing some original anime inspired stuff.

Just some suggestions if you're getting despondant about the state of the scene.

Sorry to barge in. Interesting thread.
I just wanted to point out that people already do this, check out "spoil" for the corridor thing in particuler. It's just that whenever anyone uses anything other than fades and presets, it automaticuly becomes "one of the many brainless effects videos that's killing amvs."
Wait, it's when someone DOESN'T use presets that it's called brainless? How does THAT work?
It's because most people will equate a video that has tons of fancy effects and transitions as one that relies ENTIRELY on those special effects and the video otherwise has no merrits. Hence it is brainless because it has no meaning, purpose or artistic merrit other than to show off a lot of fancy effects.

Not saying I agree with that line of thought but that is generally what he's getting at.

As for a slump; meh I don't think so. Fact is I think the longer we've been editing the more "samish" it becomes. The hobby doesn't change, you do because you've seen so many videos and possibly edited so many yourself that nothing feels new anymore. Conversely anybody who would start watching amvs now would not feel taht way. Editing doesn't change much; sure we get access to new technologies but those only give us the ability to make the video look and sound nicer really but the motif behind the video was likely jsut as possible a decade ago.

Either that or people are just getting picky.

in other words you are getting burnt out on it... (more so the watching aspect than the creating aspect)

Your right! I'd wanted to do that for years see Olin as an example or True Fiction. I just never got around to it xD glad you brought it up!

Well, I don't like actually spoil that much myself, I think the effects went so far as to obstruct the video. But it is high profile, and I didn't want to bother serching out any links. (Though to it's credit it did try to change the story around)

Must not've been thinking properly when I wrote that. I ment that videos that can't really be called effects videos 'cause they just have a B&W or some piano keys thrown on, can't be labled as brainless effects videos because the majority of it is plain old cut and fade.

Sephiroth wrote:Everyones spoiled, also more and more people are making vids each year, its gotten to overload there's no way anyone can shift through through every single video so a lot of what people see is crap because that's a lot of what there is.
BZZT wrong answer, lizardlips.

Videos released:
2002: 7035
2003: 16436
2004: 28843
2005: 37974
2006: 30101
2007: 15839
2008 so far: 5868, which puts us on track of ending the year around 10k or so.

The org has peaked and is now on a decline. I put forth the theory that it's because anime is changing from the in thing for mindless sheep to like to yesterdays fad. Someone else, I forget who, thought it's because the tube is pulling off all the shitty makers and leaving just the more uhh dedicated I guess amv makers on the org. It's probably actually a mixture of both. Either way, this year will most likely have the least videos released since 2002.
