Batman: Gotham Knight

Post by Prodigi » Sat Aug 02, 2008 7:27 pm

Batman: Gotham Knight is listed on the site as unconfirmed anime. I'd like to have that changed to confirmed anime on the basis that:
#AMV Site Rules wrote:‘Anime’ here is essentially defined as Japanese animation, including things like cutscenes from Final Fantasy games and so on.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1117563/
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com.au/ency ... p?id=10174

The 6 short stories in Gotham Knight were animated by 4 japanese animation studios:

Bee Train
Madhouse Studios
Production I.G
Studio 4°C

However what it a Japanese controlled production or American?

For example the series called "Cybersix" was a Canadian/French co-production that hired a Japanese company to do the anime and it's not considered anime, so what would make this be considered anime?

Yes, there have been some exception taken that are in the spirit of anime (Robotech Shadow Wars, etc), but Batman is really a North American Icon. However I'll look into it a bit more before saying yes or no as it falls under the "Case by Case basis" category..

This is pretty much the same situation as animatrix though, and as far as i'm concerned animatrix is considered anime.

Yes, however a lot of the segmments for it did had Japanese studio creative and story control and were in the spirit of anime, so so long as that is the case here it should be fine...

Good point. This wasn't something I had taken into consideration.

As far as I'm concerned, if The Animatrix is allowed into the catalog, then there's no good reason why Batman: Gotham Knight shouldn't be. The process behind both is very similar. With the Animatrix, it was based on a story by the Wachowski Brothers, who had directorial input and story credits in the production, and all of the actual animation was produced by Japanese animation studios. The same sort of deal happen with BGK.

Ok, It's accepted as anime. Just keep in mind that titles on the same lines as this in the future will still be looked at on a case by case basis and will not mean automatic approval
