Yep, 2012 December 21st was the day indeed.
Also, macroblocking etc will be intentionally used as effects as soon as they will be considered as an old thing and relative just to the past. At the time, macroblocking will prolly give an old/flashback feeling like noise and scratches give us today. That's gonna happen when BRD+HDTV will be the world-wide standard... and that's gonna take some years... I guess around 5 years from now? Also, when that will happen, 1280x720 is going to be, like... the average resolution used in AMVs, and 640x360 will be looked down like 320x240 is nowadays.

There'd have to be some connotation in the effect and it'd have to be drastic, but i could see something like that happening. I mean, static and snow are used for purposes (however menial they may be) that best suit them, and we use lensflares like video-sarcasm already, so it's not impossible. Artfags have already use horribly JPEG compression rendered images of the world trade center on fire to make a statement of how Americans get their news, so there's president for compression-based artifacts used in expressive, art or art-like mediums already.
