Excel and Climate Control

Post by OhMyBelldandy009 » Sun Nov 17, 2002 1:56 pm

WTF? How can excel be dying from heat exhausrion in the city and then be dying of frostbite at a nearby mountain? You'd think the two extremes would yield a somewhat mild climate!

Well, in the city, everything is surrounded by pavement, and will absorb the heat, making the land around it hotter. The mountain is away from the city, and is at a higher elevation. Besides, who says that those episodes don't take place in different seasons? ;)

wacky weather

Yeppers, since I'm a graduate teaching assistant in geography I'll prattle on a bit.

Cities
Cities are indeed heat islands. Due to the fact that there is typically little vegetative cover, cities absorb shortwave insolation and release long wave heat radiation much more quickly than would a mountain climate. Therefore, planting trees, and creating green belts in cities is one effective way to combat the heat.

Mountains
The dry adiabatic lapse rate is typically 5.5 degrees Farienheit every 1000 feet in elevation you climb, and orographic processes will also contribute to rapid cooling of air masses as they climb mountain slopes. There fore it is possible to have rapid temper change when climb up a mountain. It is for this reason that mountain weather patterns can be highly erradic and can change from a sunny day to a blizzard in mere hours.
