Masking out a color?
I know in Sony Vegas 7.0, you can do a mask, then save the mask and apply it to a solid color. Is there a way to do that same concept in AE?

Well, I'm not sure what you need. Thread's title makes me think of color keying, so follow what zarx's said. Post makes me think you actually are looking for a masking tool, which is the pen tool (works basically the same as in vegas: it's the pen-like thing between the tools... should be in the upper side of your screen). When you said applying a mask to a solid, makes me think like you want to use a solid to mask out a video (track matte keying)... you have track matte right in the timeline, just at the right of the layer name, if it's hidden, just make it show up (click on the un-selected things in the bottom-left corner of the timeline... IIRC). Also, track matte keying should be available between the keying methods too... it's present in premiere pro cs3 as well, after all.
Hope this helps somehow. o.O

I also don't understand what end result you're aiming for. Keying will make pixels of the specified color transparent. However, if you mean you want to remove a certain color but still keep those pixels opaque, then use the Hue/Saturation filter.
In any case, the most flexible way is to draw your mask on an adjustment layer and add the effect to that.
