#1 isn't very likely to happen.... I'll admit to a considerable bias given I've been on the staff since before the con started, but Boston tends to from my observation have a very good grasp on just how popular AMVs are with attendees.
Like...trying to reschedule the most popular AMV showing time for Saturday at 8 a.m. which - coincidentally - was when the convention center authorities were planning on opening the building to attendees? As it turned out, they didn't open the center until about 8:20 a.m., so it's a darn good thing the event got moved back only to 9, but still... Maybe that will never happen again (I kind of doubt it will), but as of March 2008 "their" grasp on AMV popularity didn't seem too solid.
#2 though- yeah, that doesn't surprise me that much. It's an issue that many of us have had to deal with over the years. It's difficult to really get involved and change things from the outside, but then as you say you lose the ability to participate in many contests.
It's too bad there's not some way around the staff issue. I can't really fuss too much since I don't think I have anything to contribute to an AMV track (what am I supposed to do, preach proper use of the pen tool?? Maybe just use, period?) and I'm not sure I'd give up the chance to have an AMV of mine shown since AB's the only con I'm pretty much guaranteed to attend.

But IF there was a way around the staff thing and IF I had something to contribute, I probably would try to.
