I figure, now it's just a universal anime convention thing. The way the story was passed down to me, Chair came from Fanime; first I've ever heard of Otakon being involved. (though I've never been, can't afford to go to the other coast)Scintilla wrote:I'm going to remember this quote for the next time Cyanna asks me "isn't Chair just an Otakon thing?".

Yeah, that's what I keep saying when it comes up.Cantih wrote:I figure, now it's just a universal anime convention thing.Scintilla wrote:I'm going to remember this quote for the next time Cyanna asks me "isn't Chair just an Otakon thing?".
My version of the story came from Scott Melzer, in the notes that came with the VCD of "This Is Otakudom" (to explain a joke therein) and were written out back in 2002. So the actual incident that started it must have occurred before 2001, as that's when the fan parody premiered.Cantih wrote:The way the story was passed down to me, Chair came from Fanime; first I've ever heard of Otakon being involved. Apparently it started one Otakon when one of the cosplay groups at the Masquerade had a chair brought out and set up on stage for their act, but then took forever to get out there themselves... so, for a good bit of time, the only thing on stage was the chair. Which got people chanting. And then it became a fad.
/me still fondly remembers the Otakon 2003 Masquerade with its chants of "CHAIR AND PEACE!"

I don't think you get it. It's not just any chair. It's a unique director's chair with the AX logo silkscreened on it, hand signed by the GoH's. Some years, they even gave out two of them (Kevin Caldwell has a full dinette set - I had to settle for two).Unlimited Rice wrote:They actually give chairs as prizes? Man, that's pretty crazy.
