Really? That bad? I'm caught between feeling downtrodden for contributing to the number of craptastic AMVs (submitted to action, btw), or feeling uplifted that the competition is so light.AtomX wrote:Of all the categories, I'd say that trailer/parody was the strongest percentage. Now granted, there were only 6 entries in this category, as opposed to, say, 32 for romance. But I'd say about 4-5 of the videos were fairly solid. Which is less than I can say for the other categories unfortunately :\
On another note, Vic was supposed to get the prescreening forms in the mail yesterday, right? Needy little child that I am inside, I was hoping that some form of confirmation on the successful and timely shipping of the scores would be made available once they were received, considering that it corresponds, I think, directly to when we'll find out whether or not our videos got in.
Ya know, I just realized something I love about this part of the forum. Granted, I haven't seen much of the entire forum, but from this thread, we're all people competing with eachother to get into (what I think is) one of the most prestigious AMV contests on the east coast, at the very least, and we're all remaining civil and friendly with eachother. Call me a sap, but I think this is true... AMVmanship? I dunno.

Miracle_Falcon - Your post made me smile.
I think we just respect each other. Since we all enjoy what's created here, we're just as excited to see what other people have produced as we are to see our video make it. At least I am. If my vid doesn't get in that just means that better vids will be in the contest.
...but after all the videos I've created over the years, I made my first EVER romance vid to submit to Otakon *sigh* And I'm really concerned about it's chances...at least it wasn't a lovey-dovey-fluffy romance vid (I'm not a fan) I almost entered it in action!
But it's thematically romance, and it wouldn't have been much better there.
Wait...Miracle_Falcon? I think I met you! My first or second Otakon (2005 or 2006) you were sitting right in front of me and my sister!
If that's true, I'm going to be amused! GOOD LUCK! *high fives*

I honestly think this is the most excited I've been to find out whether or not my vid made it into Otakon's contest since I started submitting three years ago! And strangely enough, if it didn't make it in, I am *SO* looking forward to seeing my score, and (if possible) any comments (insults) that were attached to my vid.
BUT! This time I used your guide, Vic, and I have to say it was absolutely fantastic. I consider myself fairly intelligent, but I look at A&E's guide and I see this: @!#!@$#%$#$#@##@!!@!#@NTSC?
So, thank you for writing a guide that I can actually follow!
I'm really looking forward to this year's contest, whether my vid is in the mix or not. Good luck to everyone!

Or they just don't know what the hell they're doing, which has been my problem in the past.VicBond007 wrote: There are no subcategories. It would be moronic to assume that one can accurately rank a video based on an average of technical aspects. Video quality and sound quality are expected to be 10's, otherwise it's obvious that somebody didn't pay for their source.

Most of the prescreening judges are seasoned AMVeterans (u see wut I did thar?) who aren't afraid to give low scores to mediocre videos. This means that most videos do worse at the prescreenings than they would with a general convention audience, however it also means that the GOOD videos receive significantly higher scores from the same judges, tipping the scales in their favor, making sure that the worse videos don't "slide" into the contest by having a mediocre score.Miracle_Falcon wrote:Really? I expect to have the forms in the mail today, counted by tomorrow, and the final list ready to go by Monday.

I wasn't at the prescreening, but if your video was the one on your profile, I have to say good job! That worked surprisingly well. Mine was also trailer, so we're probably in the same boat.Silk_SK wrote:My first contest ever. Having one of the trailer parodies in a sea of music videos probably helped I hope. I'd imagine that with so few of them they may have stood out more during the long, arduous pre-screenings.
Having only 5 competitors also helps.
