After the fact anime (only liked AFTER you watched em)
Just curious, how often do you end up only liking an anime AFTER the last show, because in the end it proved to have a great story not apparent from the first initial shows?
I just finished watching Manabi Straight. And to be honest, I nearly quit at ep 3,4,5 simply because, well, it's initially an odd looking show.
But by the last show it's clear, yes, I really liked this show.
It's drawn uniquely, well maybe not too uniquely. It has that chibi like style that I saw used in Lucky Star, where the girls look a lot smaller (younger) than they supposedly are.
The show has zero fan service, which means it's girl friendly, which means parents can't even come close to wondering if it is young person appropriate. I'm planning on suggesting it to a buddy to show his younger daughter.
It has a nice background message.
And over all, that's ok.

Anime, one of the few things about the internet that doesn't make me hate the internet.

Neon Genesis Evangelion comes to mind here.
From the get-go, you wonder where it's going. Sure, there's big robots and invading alien-ish beings mixed with a pair of depressive teens and a hyperactive red-head. Said from that context (which everyone who started Eva usually formulates early on), it seems like nothing really special beyond the other giant robot shows.
It's right about the middle is where things really pick up, and the endings (both the original and the Director's Cut) turns out to be a huge surprise from the humble beginnings. Then you watch it again and realize that there was a lot more being done and said in those beginning episodes that now makes a lot more sense only after you've seen in through to the end.

For me most of Abe's stuff, take even Lain or Haibane Renmei, is like that. With the characteristic pacing there, it's often hard to tell where it's going and get the meaning of some of the symbolism in its subtleties until you see it sort of connect at the end and then have a chance to sit down and think about it.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

x2. the last few episodes really made up for what it lacked in the first few. As well as what GQ mentioned, that after watching it all the way through once, you see a lot more happening that you didn't think was of any consequence before.GloryQuestor wrote:Neon Genesis Evangelion comes to mind here.

I thought of Ergo Proxy while reading this thread.
Ergo Proxy does allot of jumping around. Though the main focus goes from Real to Vincent, it also focuses on a couple others, which, if no-one else, confused me. It frustrated me to that I thought the show was going nowhere. Until the ending when they explain what's really happening.

Everything came from nothing, therefore everything is nothing.
There's nothing to worry about.

5cm Meters Per Second. I dont know if it was all the AMVs I saw with it that made me think, "Wow this going to be awesome!", but until the last second of it I was not really liking it. Then the ending song came on and I was like 0_0 and started crying from the entire movie, as I began to realize just what it was exactly about and it made me think a lot about my own life. Funny thing, had that ending theme song not been there, I probably would have not realized what it was about.

What's the difference between the original and Director's cut? I don't know which one I saw. The ending made little to no sense to me as I missed one of the discs and wasn't fully paying attention to some episodes, and pretty much learned most of what I know through the spoilerific Wikipedia articles.GloryQuestor wrote:Neon Genesis Evangelion
