There was a thread about it not that long ago... I thought it was in GAMV but going back 20 or so pages got me nothing - also the search doesn't seem to like the @ symbol (didn't even find this thread).LivingFlame wrote:What, exactly, does M@D (same as MAD?) stand for? I've yet to figure that out. =\
M@D's as a category?

If taken, that line of reasoning would allow any animation to be here as well. Anime is what the Japanese call animation and all.Streicher wrote:When considering MADs as its own video category. Could you please also make German AMVs it's own video category. And while doing that, consider Russian and Finnish AMVs also.
If necessary, we'll even invent our own words for AMV to be applicable.

I dunno about all this talk about a mad category however something slightly related:
Like next to the anime your selecting there is a button for: "Spoilers" and "In Video"
There could be a button for "Manga" or "Game". Dunno how that would be incorporated into the search function though. But if it was, it could help people looking for AMV's using pictures and outtakes from games or manga.
I know there's a lot of games with unique titles differentiating from their anime counterparts but this is more for the mangas and games that have the same name as the game with no differences. It might take some cleaning to get rid of a lot of the redundant names but the listings wouldn’t be as big and it would be easier for people to find exactly what they are looking for and not select the anime when they were trying to select the game or vice versa. They will also be able to tell people whether or not they are using the manga instead of the anime.
It's more of a, "do the benefits exceed the workload kinda thing" i guess when considering if its worth it.

MADs are more of a style if you ask me. Calling them japanese amv's is just generalizing. I remember once me and my friend compared some of the top 10% amv's on this site with MADs and clearly seeing major differences. We tried to establish the points of main focus for MAD's as an acronym and came up with: Motion, Ambience, and nothing for "D". D was too hard to think of a word that wont need a dictionary to understand. We were trying to incorporate "still images" with a word starting with "D" but were unable obviously. Just said that to help portray it as a style.

"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

M@Ds do have a kind of distinct style, but that doesn't have a lot to do with being what defines them as just something that has grown out of the Japanese M@D community, in some effort to outdo each other in technical skill and achievement. And there are plenty of M@Ds that look a lot like the AMVs we make, and there are probably plenty of crappy M@Ds that resemble the worst 'Tube videos out there (and browsing the various Japanese versions of the tube proves that point rather well).
Far better to leave M@D it's original definition as "the term for an AMV in Japan".

Or am I thinking of the other type of M@D? (Szcechuan?)
