Well, if the speed of the clips has been altered, then I still suggest disabling the resample and then trying again. (I'd be more specific, but I don't know what program you're using.)
... yea ...

It still laggs on my PC actually but i was editing with lossless files not from avs on the external. There's also speed limit on usb transfer (usb 2.0 is better than optic tho) regardless of how fast the drives are on either end (you can only shove so much up the pipe at once), and the signal/speed degrades with more the 2-3 metres of cable (I forget the specific length).

I read some article comparing transfer speeds about 2 years ago, just found it by googling it might be worth chasing up.
new banzors in the making :p

The bandwidth of the USB cable can get in the way of perfect playback of lossless files, that's true. I'm used to editing DV compressed footage (captured off a camera; most of my editing work is live stuff, not anime) which has no problems playing back off an external.

If you want to eliminate such bandwidth woes, however, then get a Firewire 800 PCI-E card and an external drive capable of using Firewire 800. You will likely be able to play lossless SD footage with no lag. HD is still another story. =\

USB 2.0 = 480Mbits/s transfer rate
Firewire 800 = 800Mbits/s transfer rate

(On my system, which is a bit outdated, lossless SD anime footage plays pretty smoothly, though it's still only about 20 fps instead of the full 23.976 fps. That's over USB 2.0.)

I've used ext. hd's to edit before, no real problems. But once the drive got unplugged and i started freaking out for some reason .... i don't really remember what happened, it was like 2 years ago. It was pretty funny though. lol
Why did i bother posting this? : /

Well the hard drive is pretty old (four years I think) so I'm not certain about its stats or so. It lagged horribly on my old PC but that thing is about six or seven years old. The latop is only about two years old with much MUCH better hardware. My concern was lag in editing obviously and if PRemiere would keep crashing while I work.

I do edit in AVS format.

You mean some clips don't show when you render the video? Did you change the speed of those clips by any chance? If so, find a way to disable resampling for those clips. If speed changes are indeed the problem, that should fix it.
They don't show when I export the final file...but it's weird, the effects I used on them do show, but the actual clips don't. I didn't speed up any of the clips, but I did slow down a few... but it doesnt make sense because they're all the same format and some clips from the same episode show up while others from the same episode do, even others from the same exact file, while others don't.... it's very weird.
I've had that with a Video a while ago O.o I never thought it could have been the fact that I edited from the external....
