How much is to much?!
My next AMV project is using a series that isn't in the US, other in as fansubs. I have the fansubs and I'm going to try and just use them for an AMV, but I have also been looking into getting good quality footage. However the cost for getting the 40 episode series on DVD from Japan is going to $500.00! Is it worth it for a 5 minute video? I say yes, but I really can't justify spending so much still for a series that I'll use once. <sigh> What do other people think? Anyone else have the same problem? If it was like $200 I wouldn't mind so much, but really...$500.00!

Hey Anneke. If you're talking about Versailles no Bara (Rose of Versailles) the DVD box-set's do cost a bit. I'm importing in a couple DVD's from Japan too. Maybe you should only use footage from one of the box sets. It all depends. Also, region 2 DVD ripping is a bitch without the right software (I think it's DVDGenie). But, they are high quality.
The other choice is getting high quailty fansubs. The TechnoGirls fansub distro is very nice and they have good quality copies of the tapes ^^

I'd say it's only too much if you have to sacrifice something in exchange for buying it. Some people spend hundreds of dollars on their hobbies of collecting misc. items. Think of sports fans who travel around following their team across the country. It's fine to me if you spend every last penny of your money on something you love to do...in fact I would encourage it.
What good is money if we never spend it on something?
It's better than saving all of your money for a rainy day..unless that rainy day is to be taken as a vacation to a tropical island
In other words, unless it puts you back so much you get evicted or you have to choose between a month's worth of groceries or buying the dvds, go for it. Trying to justify something only works if you are trying to talk yourself *into* something ^_^

O_O GOOD LORD!!! No I wouldnever spend that much for one video unless you desperatley want that series and will watch it a lot and that it will NEVER be released over here I say don't get it. Five-hundred-dollars is just too much in my opinion for one video.
