Classic AMVs Weekly #9 - Taking old old old school

Classic AMVs Weekly #9 - June 9th, 2008

We have AMV member marco to thank for suggesting this, and also to even pointing out such a gem to me. This week, we are going truly old school.

You Know Who - Girls With Guns
Vintage: 1990
Anime: Dirty Pair
Music: Styx - Girls With Guns

Links in the below quote:
Email from marco (Edited slightly) wrote: There's a video which I consider a classic, made in 1990,
called "Girls With Guns". You can find a very old copy here:

It is the AMV at the bottom right, featuring the "Dirty Pair"
(the FTP password is "@mv" BTW). I've contributed it to Minion's
vault:

There's even an interesting story behind the creator, which
you can read here:

PS.
Interesting fact: even though the song "Girls With Guns" features
a catchy tune which describes an entire anime genre, there isn't a
single AMV on the org which uses it.

This video is sooooo old, and yet it displays so much greatness. The video quality is not the greatest, but that is to be expected given its age. But if you go beyond the grainy video quality, and watch the AMV, you will see an amazing amount of synch. This had to have taken a ton of hard work to make on 2 VCRs, and if the creator were still around lurking somewhere (Who knows if he is or not), I just want to say that I am absolutely amazed. I was only 10 years old when this was made, and needless to say, I wasn't even into anime yet apart from having seen some Voltron.

Again, just an amazing video, and like marco said, a great song that seems to be really unrepresented here on the org.

I've wanted to do a video to the song, but couldn't pull it together (and technically, it's not Styx, it's from Tommy Shaw's solo project, though he is a member of Styx).

Fun stuff, though. I'm impressed at the timing present, and I'm strongly reminded of some of Duane Johnson's work with this one.

Don't use the FTP, use the second link, then grab girls.zip from that page.

When you click the username is set to be "v4u". If not, the login
combo is v4u/@mv. But, as someone else said, you can save me
some bandwidth and use the other link.

As mentioned previously, the song is actually by Tommy Shaw,
and the vid was made in-studio (surreptitiously, as the USENET
post indicates, thus requiring the editor to remain anonymous).

I only have two of You Know Who's AMVs, but I think they're
both great and have been an inspiration for me. I used to
submit AMVs to cons under the moniker "Yun Ohu" as a tribute
of sorts. By today's standards "Girls With Guns" (in actuality
simply called "Dirty Pair Video") is technically trivial, and yet
the lyrics/video matchup, sync, flow and overall energy is still
up there with the best, IMO. I guess that two lovely angels and
one handsome devil really did make a great team 8-)

yea, not much technically but hey, that vid is just 5 years younger than me so i'll give it some respect. sync wasnt really beat for beat sync, more of general flow and matching lyrics with appropriate scenes. but hell, doing anything on a vrc is admirable so grats to the guy who made it

Technically impressive, given the method used at the time. But beyond that, this video really makes me want to watch my Dirty Pair TV fansubs again.

Totally pimp. This is an old school vid I like very much.
Probably too busy to be here right now.
