What about the crap on the org?
Ok this is just a thought based on the thread linking to some guy's rant on crap amvs on the tube.
The Tube EASILY has a horrible ratio of good AMVs to awful (2% at best I'd say, probably less).
However, the org here has allready 125,000+ music videos spread out over roughly 44,000 editoirs. Surely not all those videos are "good." (Note: I don't mean to disparage anyone in particular but statistically not everything here can be good). And while I don't know how many AMVs youtube has (a search says "millions" but that likely includes people who put it in descriptions for hits, duplicate videos and things with coincidentally the same letters) I would still no less doubt that its ratio of good videos to poor is smaller. Nonetheless it does make one wonder, you never hear of anyone popping up on the org with a LEGITIMATE argument that the actual number of good videos here is poor and basing their opinion of AMVs on the dozen or so crap AMVs they pulled up by chance.
So the question is, why do you think we never get people showing up saying most of what is here is crap? I can think of a few plausible explenations.
1. Filtering, unlike the tube, the org has a lot of ways to find videos that are "good" by the public eye, the top 10%, the star scale, contest searches. The tube you can only just search for videos in general.
2. A subset of one actually, but generally reviewers/people on this site tend to be more discerning when it comes to rating an AMV, on the tube you will spot tons of videos that are otherwise crap (for a large variety of reasons) but still manage to get 3-4 stars easily with comments saying how wonderful it is. While I can't figure out why "Everytime you touch Goku" got such rave reviews on the tube I can say that generall people on the org are more discerning when looking at the quality of a video. And while you might argue that the rating and star systems here are flawed, they are certainly a more reliable indicator of quality than tube comments and its ratings.
3. Exposure, the tube is easily one of the most popular sites on the web, as a result new editors will sooner flock to it due to its higher exposure and post evertyhing there. Editors who are generally better and/or more interested in AMVs often will find this place sooner or later and post their work here, even if they don't otherwise participate in the community, wheras little Jimmy who wants to make a Naruto video to Nirvana after seeing episode 52 on Cartoon Network will find the tube more accessible to post his work.

I agree.
The org com seams to be more mature, in general. Yes all the rating systems are flawed, but in the end they´re still a good thing to find good stuff.
YT opened the floodgate for a new wider group of users. Including all the trolls etc. It´s like WMM for AMVs.

That's just the people who bother to hang around in the forums. There are a ton more users who could care less about us here.Bauzi wrote:The org com seams to be more mature, in general. Yes all the rating systems are flawed, but in the end they´re still a good thing to find good stuff.
Here, we tend not to be exposed to the great masses of crap videos so much. Be thankful for it.

Just a guess, but considering how the org is nice to keep track of EVERY video I have downloaded, I can see that the number of 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s seems to be about equal for me.
So in other words, even with my attempts to be selective, you can't always end up liking a video, even with decent searching capacity and popular opinions being available.
But I'm willing to claim that if the org had a 1-10 scale instead of a 1-5 scale, most of my choices would still be in the 6-10 range while most tube videos would be in the 1-5 range.
I DO see the occasional tube video though that was a well done idea, it just had dreadful video quality. It's not easy to determine if it just looks that way because of the tube, or if they merely uploaded it in a bad quality level.

Anime, one of the few things about the internet that doesn't make me hate the internet.

I think half of the problem with the terrible AMV's on hosatchel has to do with the users themselves. The Org is a relatively obscure site in the grand scheme of things, while gootube is known by everyone and their dog. As a result, even the most mediocre crap gets lauded as "special" just because "omg they know how to upload to teh intarwebz!"
I'm making a sweeping generalization here, but just about any AMV uploaded to the tube whatsoever will garner high praise from the masses who just flat out don't know any better. The crap videos get 4 and 5 stars because the people watching them know nothing other than "shoot crappy video with webcam, press upload." They believe that actually EDITING a video is some secretive, dark art known only to the Chosen Few willing to recite arcane and cryptic incantations while making sacrifices to heathen gods. Because of this, anyone who makes any effort whatsoever MUST be in league with immortal deities and therefore commands their respect, lest their fragile souls be torn asunder for having the audacity to think for themselves.
It's honestly the exact same thing you see in computer repair. You have no idea how many drooling, barely evolved pond scum come to me with computer problems, only to be shocked and amazed when I reset their IP and turn off a few unneeded services, "magically" making their computer all better again.

I certainly didn't before the .org...Castor Troy wrote:You'll be surprised how the average person doesn't know how to ftp upload.
And yeah, I'll have to agree with Kal, it seems that, for the majority, the people who really do care about what they're doing, and who want to improve, become a part of the community. There's definitely a plethora of bad videos on the .org, we're just don't see them because they sit in the back rows.

i think its just because people are genuinely bothered by the amvs on youtube - there like ads. For example since official music videos can sometimes get taken down all thats left are the amvs. Also to get the video you want you may have to type "[song title] - OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO" to not get plastered with amvs.

90+% OF EVERYTHING IS subjective SHIT
Get ovar it, people
I'm serious, didn't we have about 50 discussions recently where the subjectivity of good, outside of technical merits, was pointed to again and again? We can all agree on one completely inarguable thing, I think: the .org provides competent editors with a better space to get their technically-polished videos up, for no other reason than the fact you can easily upload extremely high-quality video here, which you wouldn't be able to do on hosatchel in the firstplace.
Everything else is really quite pointless considering we still can't objectively say what good is outside of those technical merits. You may as well say that the .org is nerdrage heaven for technically-better-than-thou editors that scares away the sane - and nerdrage we do get
