FanimeCon 2008 AMV Contest - Deadline May 5th

Firstly I had the same issues with the voting system like many did. I also did not appreciate the pushy 'get out we got to get ready for a concert in like 3 hours' speal we got from the security. Um, if you wanted us to get out quickly it should have been easier to vote.

It wasn't that people weren't interested in AMV's it was that we were competing with several cosplay events and a Lolli party and I remember there being another 'crowd pleaser' but I can't remember exactly what it was. One of the best ideas from last year's event was to have a showing of the contest every day, letting people plan around their favorite events. I don't know why they didn't do that again because it was AWESOME!!! The room was packed every day!

I also felt we could have had up to 10 entries per category. This is one of the biggest Cons on the west coast. No reason to have a small sampling of the AMV's submitted.

I really felt this contest was sub par from the same event for last year. Last year's contest was managed a heck of a lot better.

Congrats NightlHlawk, even in a weird category your video really floored everyone including me.

Not really my point, I'm just generally commenting on action videos, it should not have been part of my Fanime criticisms.

Most contest coordinators do not have a personal vendetta against you, and actually place your video probably thinking you had a better chance of winning in that category than the one you suggested.
Yes your opinion matters, but I highly doubt there was any malicious intent.

I doubt there was anything malicious going on, I would have just liked to have been informed that my video was moving categories is all.

Good point, thats pretty problematic, cause I had a buddy who thought he got in (he received the email for making it), but in fact his videos did not.

Yeah there was quite a bit of confusion from what I hear.

I don't know where you are getting this idea. If you want an AMV meet and greet over lunch, coordinate this yourself on the forums or something. Fanime should be in no way personally responsible for setting this up for us. AX doesn't even do this. The AMV creators work it out themselves over the forums.

Sorry, I'm just used to one being set up by the staff, I'm go out on my own and set something up for the next one that does have one.

This was a MAIN EVENT at Fanime, I don't know what else they can do to make it more important.
The poor turn out at the event is probably due to the fact that the attendees in general do not care about AMVs as much as other things (masquerade).

You may be right, although I found it odd that it was placed mid-day rather than at night when fewer events are going on.

Not to be a jerk but I'm going to really rant about my entry into the contest.
It was stated in the emails that I received that I made it in the contest.

The first email that I received.

Hello,
First things first, you might be receiving this message twice. This is because you submitted two entries. This message is to let you know that we at Fanime Con 2008 AMV have received your entry, and have accepted you into the FIRST ROUND OF JUDGING. This does not mean that you have won anything yet, this just means that you are eligible to move on to the next round, which is viewer’s choice.

I want you all to know that not everyone will make it to viewer’s choice, but we’re trying to ensure that at some point during the con, everyone’s video will be shown. Hopefully we will be able to show the videos that were not selected for viewer choice on Stage Zero at night. This is not confirmed, but we are working on the idea and are trying to iron out the details. There is also a possibility that we might not be able to show them at all, but that’s a slim possibility.

Everyone will be informed as to whether they will be going on to the viewer’s choice round or not. Please do not be discouraged if you didn’t make it to the next round. With the large number of entries and time limitations we have to select only a few to make it on to the next round.

Last year we were able to give out day passes to all editors. Unfortunately we found it to be too expensive and are unable to do the same this year. I’m very sorry if this inconveniences anyone.

The Location of the Viewers choice Round is the San Jose Civic Center
The Time is Sunday May 25th at 12:00-2:00PM

I only received one however, but I did send in two. I did receive a e-mail that stated that one of my entries did not make it in.

Thank you for entering the Fanime Con 2008 AMV Contest. Everyone has done a great job this year, in fact you have made it very hard on our judges to decide which music videos make it to the Final round of the contest. I personally would love to have everyone’s Videos showcased up on the big screen but due to time constraints I’m limited to only allowing in a select few, and I’m sorry but you didn’t make it to the Finals. Don’t despair your efforts and abilities do not go unnoticed, I will have a special showing of all the videos entered on Stage ZERO on Sunday evening probably around midnight and run until all the videos have been shown. Thank you very much for trying hard this year.

P.S. If you have have entered more then video this year you will probably be receiving more the one message.

Here is the email I sent since I did not receive a email to know about my other entry if it made it into the contest.

Curious to know if you sent one message by error or not since I did send in it two AMVs and only received one confirmation so I wanna know if this for both my AMV's or just one.
But if it wasn't were the choices of picking a old anime cut the chances of getting in the contest or no? Not to sound mean or anything but I just want to know

Then I receive this email to confirm my entry into the contest.

One Video made it into the finals the other didn’t. And we don’t judge videos on how old the source media is. We judge the video on a certain criteria which is posted on the FMV website, I urge you to look and see how all the videos were judged.

As I showed the email above, I was told unless I received a email that stated that my entry was in the finals I would be in the contest but it didn't look like that even when I showed the email to Sean that clearly stated that I was in the finals.

But it seemed as if (Not trying to be mean here) Sean was changing the topic in consideration to the asking of my question in the previous email which had no connection to what so ever to what we were even talking about. I didn't want to continue talking to Sean since it would not change anything as the contest was almost done anyways, and it became a big waste of time I waited through out most of the contest.

Here is what should be done.

1. Release a finalist list as soon as possible after the deadline, but not a week before the con.

Thats it, if I knew ahead of time that I wasn't going to be in the contest I wouldn't be so mad. Just about every AMV contest does this, I don't know why Fanime has to be any different in doing so. I wouldn't be making such a big deal out of it. But I'm doubting that email is a error since he did state I was in the finals along with the question.

Half the reason for my coming to Fanime was the contest, and to come 6 hours away and to find out that I was not in almost made me want to go crazy and make a idiot out of myself in the Civic Center Hall, but I didn't.

I just want to know what happened Sean...

That sucks, and I feel your pain. I once flew across the country to attend an AMV contest where I was promised by the coordinator that my video would atleast be shown as exhibition if nothing else. Yeah...didn't happen. So as I said I feel your pain.

Kinda random, but I actually have recorded footage of the awards ceremony for every video, and the editors who went up on stage (nice speech btw NightlHlawk, short and simple, "be a man", lol) Oh and, I lost the game =P not sure if you were there for that >.>

I'll try to get a full list up as soon as possible (although I'm quite lazy, so to anyone who was already doing a list, go ahead and beat me to it if you wish =P)
