Weird Line Problems (Clannad R2s)

Post by Kero777 » Thu May 22, 2008 1:00 pm

I was applying filters to clean up the Clannad R2s and this problem was so minor that I didn't even know it was there at first. Now that I notice it, it jumps out right at me. It's almost like a ghosting problem, but what makes it's different from ghosting is the lines are there even when the characters don't move between frames. As a matter of fact, these two pictures were captured when the characters don't move for at least 10 frames after.

Screencap one, upscaled:
She has a "ghost" like outline very close to the edges of her clothes and hair. The next 10 or so frames are exactly the same. She does not move in the slightest bit besides her mouth.

Screencap two, upscaled
Extra outlines of him and the girl... Again they don't move for a while after this frame except their mouths.

I thought maybe Forced Film messed up in DGIndex somehow, so I tried IVTC and deinterlacing myself, but then I noticed it's still clearly there even before attempting to remove the interlacing. So, it's nothing to do with interlacing.

Any ideas on how to fix this? If anyone else has the R2 DVDs, I'd appreciate it if you pop them in and tell me if you can see the problem on yours too. It could be my monitor, but I highly doubt it. I don't remember this problem before.

I have a feeling I'm not going to be able to fix this weird problem. Thanks for reading.

That problem, called 'ringing' is typically the result of over done edge enhancement (over sharpening). http://www.videophile.info/Guide_EE/Page_01.htm

As for a fix, if it's inherent to the R2 footage, try using DeHalo_alpha or BlindDeHalo3.

Thanks, Willen. I tried out what you suggested, but unfortunately, it didn't help out much. As a matter of fact, it seems to have emphasized the problem more. :(

My script using BlindDeHalo3 was:

Code: Select all

BlindDeHalo3(rx=3.0, ry=3.0, strength=125, lodamp=0.0, hidamp=0.0, sharpness=0.0, tweaker=0.0, PPmode=0, PPlimit=0, interlaced=false)
Screencap with BlindDeHalo3 (upscaled to show problem closer):

Look around the curve of his fingers especially. I tried out DeHalo_alpha as well; same results. Hrm... :?

Are you sure those are really R2s and not just bootlegs?

Yes, I'm sure they aren't bootlegs. If these were they would be very convincing.

The problem doesn't look as bad at a normal size, but it's definitely still there and noticeable. :? Some scenes are much worse than others.

(Upper arms, sleeves, and hair are the most noticeable in this scene).

With your blinddehalo3 script it looks like your radius settings were a bit too large, as its darkening the area outside where the halo is. Try changing them from 3 down to 1 or 2.

I just tried what you suggested. Still no luck. :( Thanks for trying to help.
