plus with the way you put it, if I made a linkin ball z video before all the other linkin ball z videos (no matter how many linkin genesis evangelion videos there were before I made mine) that would make my video "original", because I've never used any of those sources before.
once again song and anime choice =/= originality...
an angst/action video will always be angst/action video no matter what song or anime is used even if you were the first one to use those specific sources or not.
concept and execution can be originality, but aren't necessarily always originality.
The editor themselves doesn't necessarily mean originality either.... Sometimes generally unoriginal editors can come up with original concepts...

I'm just saying. There is no LONGER any such thing as a true original or at least it is very rare. Original comes from the word origin meaning the source or beginning. So yes, if you made a Linkin Park video before everyone else it would indeed be original. If it's the first of it's kind it's the original. But the challenge is being the first. But when someone says "The AMV is original" they generally mean there is something that sets it apart from the rest, the statement is misleading and can lead to confusion. There are very few original ideas and most "original" AMVs are a combination of ideas used in the past. I miss spoke earlier and what I meant to say was, "Original concepts are very rare and almost nonexistent".JaddziaDax wrote:plus with the way you put it, if I made a linkin ball z video before all the other linkin ball z videos (no matter how many linkin genesis evangelion videos there were before I made mine) that would make my video "original", because I've never used any of those sources before.

Here's what I think. In order to be original, you have to use songs by artists that aren't displayed widely. I mean, how many videos have used Linkin Park, Metallica, Weird Al, Green Day, etc? I have nothing against those and similar artists, but it just gets boring after awhile hearing the same songs used.

I wonder who was the first one to make a thread about AMVs needing to be original.hasteroth wrote:I'm just saying. There is no LONGER any such thing as a true original or at least it is very rare. The obvious answer to Originality is that the amv contains something that has not been seen before. Whether that be a new concept, style, effect, method of editing, to an extent... even...level of editing etc...
However Originality, much like most descriptors is a human creation, so it depends on both the Mass of people watching, and the Individual watching it. So an element in an amv that seems original to the Mass, may not be very original to the Individual if they are very experienced in watching amvs. And vice versa.
Thus, Originality can truly only be achieved by watching all the amvs out there, and simply 'do something else.' Statistically, you could watch a large representative sample of amv's labeled as Original, then 'do something else'
One thing I want to bring up is the varying levels of originality. It doesn't actually make sense; either it's original or it isn't. 1 or 0. However, originality is a human creation after all right?-- so we can use the word in a similar way, but base it on 'frequency of similar elements in previous amvs' The more frequent, the less original, the less frequent, the more original. But like I said above, this is relative to the Individual and to the Mass. So basically, if you use anything in an amv that has been used before in high frequency [without doing anything outstandingly different], you would be fooling yourself to think you are making something original.

I don't think Requiett realizes that he just called my videos "Original" ... Poor guy.Kevmaster wrote:x3post-it wrote:X2requiett wrote:When you can pretty much tell who made something without looking at the credits.TwilightChrono wrote:When you watch an AMV, what is it you normally look for in originality?
